i just bought a 1991 5speed 240sx. it has a "cammy"idle and smells like its running rich when i got it but i drove it home. the problem is that it will die while driving if i let off the gas and let it idle back down. basicly i had to manually idle it with my foot at stoplights by blipping the throttle with the edge of my foot, it just wont hold a steady idle and bounces between 450-600 rpms.

i tried adjusting the iac to rise the idle a little and it made the idle a little better and its kind of catching itself from dieing after gassing it but now it dies instantly if i give it more than 20% throttle what could this be??

Definitely check for any kind of air/vacuum leaks. Also check out the mass air flow sensor, and clean if need be. You can also test the throttle position sensor if needed. You can download the factory service manual for instructions on how to troubleshoot (link below). This is a fairly common issue with 240s, but I've seen various things cause it.

thanks i have been looking over the FSM for a while and i have checked the MAF sensor and its clean, but i dont have a multimeter so i cant really check the ohms or whatever for the MAF and TPS.

I do hear a sucking sound around my intake manifold somewhere but i dont know where it is comming from do you know of any ways to pin point where vacuum leaks are

It's most likely that noise (or rather what is causing the noise) that's your issue. Try spraying some WD40 around points of possible air leaks like your manifold gasket, vacuum nipples, etc. If it's a vacuum leak, it will make the engine rev up a bit. If it's an air leak, you'll see it start to bubble/foam around the air leak. Good luck!
