1991-1994 240sx: Ignition switch/lock assembly replacement

Postby vancouverbc » Fri Apr 25, 2008 8:05 pm

Back to TUTORIAL Index

Ignition switchthis is what is called the ignition switch. the key rotates it to make different connections. if you put screwdriver in plastic blue part you can rotate the switch the same way key rotates it. $47 at napa. The electrical switch comes with assembly but is very distinct and separable part.

full view of ignition switch

Lock assembly/ignition switch combothe following pic shows the entire assembly. the ignition switch is held in by one small screw.$113 for switch/lock assembly at rock auto

part numbers

If you are talking about the steering wheel lock/ignition switch assembly, Nissan refers to them as SOP - Lockset Steering:Model Year:1989-1994 ALL - Part # 48700-40F861995-1998 Auto Tranny - Part # 48700-72F251995-1998 Manual Tranny - Part # 48700-73F25 price $134.00 (as of March 2003)Removal procedure

1.remove 6 philips head screws holding steering column on

2.unplug some of the connectors to get access to tamper proof bolts3.drill hole in bolt heads and remove bolts with extractor(pretty easy to get out)extractor is seen in the following picture

4.the switch is held on by small screw. remove. The ignition switch is on the opposite side of steering column from ignition lock.

5.put new lock assembly on. the left side bolt wont fit because the head is not sheared off. I just reused one of the old bolts. Otherwise, you have to take steering wheel and combination switch off.6.replace the plastic steering column that encompasses the combination switch and lock cylinder

Alternate explanation

Removal of the damaged steering wheel lock/ignition switch requires that you drill out the anti-tamper bolts that hold the steering wheel lock/ignition switch assembly to the steering column. Not that difficult to do, but may require the use of a bolt drill-out extractor set.http://www.handsontools.com/st...=8242Once you remove the two anti-tamper bolts the steering wheel lock/ignition switch assembly will literally fall off the steering column. Replacement is a matter of properly positioning the new replacement unit in & hand tightening the bolts up. Make sure you test the fit PRIOR to torquing down the anti-tamper bolts. Once you snap the heads off those anti-tamper bolts, you wont' be able to remove or readjust the /steering lock/ignition switch assembly.

Great write-up!

My ignition switch went bad. I replaced it for 30 (Advance Auto or Autozone) bucks. Couple months later the lock cylinder wasn't turning the switch to the start position correctly. Rather than going through all that to replace the lock I made a push button for the starter. Button cost $4 as opposed to over a hundred for the lock. Plus a push button impresses the ladies...true story. :p

thanks guys. it is catalogued in tutorial link in my signature under ignition

it is pretty useless for defeating thieves. wish i could disable steering wheel lock. i hate the idea that the lock could malfunction and lock steering wheel while driving

do you only need to remove one of the two tamper proof screws for the bottom bracket to come off?

and also what diameter are the tamper proofs - 10mm?

the heads are 8mm. the bolts themselves are bigger. you need to remove both. they are aluminum so it is easy to drill and they come out easy. you might be able to twist it so the left bolt is in a more accessable place with one bolt off. dont think so.

Excellant write up. I just went to Pep Boys and bought the Ignition Switch ($30). It took me just a few minutes to swap them. Now the 240 starts up without any problems.

that harness is your key sense wire, it makes the car ding. you can keep it unplugged if you find it annoying.

lol, after doing this a while ago i was shocked how easy it is to steal a 240.

my brother lost my keys in a customer's car and i brought my ign to a lock smith who made me new keys and re pinned it for a little more safety.

they are effortless to steal.

thats why a battery cut off and removable steering wheel are a must if you dont have an alarm.

thats a solenoid that locks key in. its only used for automatic tranny cars. the solenoid is encased in that white plastic thing that has 9116 written on it.

except for the key slot, this assembly looks a lot like the switch for my 1994 G20. I broke the danged key off inside the switch and now need to remove the whole unit and replace it (at least I think I do). I have gotten as far as removing the covers and can see that the switch/lock assembly looks identical (cept for the key slot) to mine.

Same procedure to remove and install?

The only think I think might be different is that the small screw that hold the electronics (the 5 soldered wires at the opposite end of the key slot) appears to be of a torx type?

Thanks for the great pics and descriptions. Just want to know if I should be looking for anything different as I tear this thing out tomorrow.

Tat
