Hi, folks, I'm new here, and I'm really hoping that somebody can help me. I've had my '90 SX for a couple of years now, and throughout all of that time, including two VERY hot summers, I have not been able to get the parts to repair my air conditioner, specifically the evaporator core, which is apparently unique to the '89 and '90 models and is not available through any source that I have tried, including Ebay and, junk yards, and used parts salvage establishments. NOBODY seems to have an evaporator coil to fit my car. I even tried having one custom built, but the first one didn't work (they're trying for a second time as I write this). I'm about to tear what's left of my hair out. The last old car that I owned was a 1963 P1800 Volvo, and it wasn't nearly this hard to find parts for.

So, my question is this: Has anyone with an '89 or '90 240sx ever had this problem, and if so, how did you manage to solve it? Is there any non-standard core that might be adapted to work in the original's place?

Nope, not Mars. Georgia. All of the junk yards that I have been able to find anywhere in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee have told me the same thing: they have coils for every model EXCEPT the one that I need. I've searched, my mechanic has searched, and my nephew, who is a Nissan mechanic, have all searched with no success.

One more summer without A/C, and I may move to Mars. I hear it's a lot cooler there.

I had a brand new one I gave away to the person who bought my car.

By the evap. core, you mean the radiator type part, right? If I'm not mistaken, the later year S13s should work as well. It's not a moving part or anything so as long as you have vacuum it'll work fine.

We just tried one for a later model, and it wouldn't work. The housing won't match up to the vents, the lines are configured wrong, and the coil itself is shaped differently, so we can't even put the new coil in my existing housing. From all of the information that I can get, the 1989 and 1990 coil and its housing are unique and not interchangeable with any of the newer models. There was one dealer on Ebay who advertised the proper coil, but when we got it, it was actually one of the newer ones, and unusable on my car. We have found one in a junkyard that is the right type, but someone had cut the lines off of it for some unknown reason. My mechanic has taken that one, along with our housing, to someone to use as a pattern to try and manufacture a new one.

I was hoping that someone here might have run into this same problem and managed to find some kind of evaporator coil for some other A/C system close enough in size and configuration to the original that it can be put into my existing housing and provide me with a workable air conditioner, because I have exhausted every other solution that I could come up with. We've tried junk yards, used parts dealers, and Ebay, all with no success whatsoever.
