Am I crazy to make a1990 q45 a daily? I aquired 1 for free, tons of runability problems, timing chain guides that were broke but the vehicle still ran?
I already pulled the motor and freshened it up, getting all the parts to do so was tricky, and kind of wierd with aamarya.

Well, you've already experienced what buying parts is like, so you know what it's like. It all depends on your tolerance for the frustration, and if you have a backup vehicle available. I have been driving mine more lately, and it's fun, but I wouldn't want to be walking if I had to order parts, or improvise something that's made out of unobtanium.

Unobtainium, I like that. Already have experienced that.
My resource and skill set is not the typical forum goer so ‘frustration ’ in repair is not an issue. Chose the rabbit hole for my kids car due to a story behind it.

Well, it sounds like you're uniquely positioned to enjoy it as a daily. There's a big difference in a daily driver that leaves you walking when it's out of service, and a daily with a backup that you can use on those occasions.

I was daily driving mine for years. I bought it back in November of 2005 and drove it until March of 21 when I bought a 2015 Q70L 5.6L. I still have the Q45 and I have been driving all this week.

Been driving my 90 as a daily. Yes I have a few parts cars in the pasture and am fighting a wiper motor currently. I have a 22 defender and it isn't a driver friendly car compared to the old Q.I dont recommend running a g50 daily but i do right now.

My '90 is my typical transportation, although since I travel often for work and work from home when I'm not traveling it doesn't get driven on a daily basis. When I first got it I went through just about everything mechanical that might become a problem: nearly every single hose in the engine compartment, timing chain guides, lifters, injectors (converted to S2), Bosch smart coils, water pump, thermostat, radiator caps, additional trans fluid cooler, a/c compressor & condenser (clogged), motor mounts, fuel pump and fuel pump controller, all fluids, brakes (pads, rotors, and hoses), coilovers, and had the alternator rebuilt. Nearly everything was OEM Nissan parts from Amayama.

Just took it on a 300 mile road trip this past weekend with zero issues and cold a/c in Arizona summertime temperatures. I'd have no hesitation driving it anywhere at this point, even with parts availability being as bad as it is. My biggest concern would be having a window regulator fail leaving me unable to roll the window up to secure the car.

It probably makes it a bit easier that I've got a couple other cars I can drive if something on the Q were to break and leave it disabled.

Oh wow, Arizona lol. Same as where mine came from.

For window regulators: mechanic taught me once to occasionally silicon spray the rubber tracks. I’ve had multiple cars with slowing window motors, this works every time. In fact, I would say that’s the main causes of window motors going bad. I haven’t replaced one ever.

I use Honda Shin-Etsu grease on my window run channels, since it's made specifically for that purpose - I cleaned and lubricated all the run channels on the car before I started driving it. I had one bad window regulator when I bought my Q45 4 years ago but haven't had any others fail yet - window regulator failures (on most vehicles, not just my Q45) seem to be more prevalent here in AZ due to the plastic cable guides becoming brittle and cracking with the heat and dryness.

This stuff is the s#!t for window channels. We use it for R52 Pathfinders, which are the all time slow-windows champs. They look at dirt and the windows get slow. This stuff stays put for a long time and won't wash away (in fact, the only way to get it off your hands is a solvent like alcohol. Soap won't touch it, you'll have slippery fingers all day). Hit all your rubber channels every couple of years and you'll never have a problem.
