I hae a 1990 Nissan 240sx S13 Shell with no motor, transmission, or interior.
My questions is: After I buy a motor set, what else do I need?
This is going to be my first time ever building a car, so what better than a 240sx.

(SR20DET Blacktop)
Motor Set Includes:
Complete Motor
Complete Head and Block
Intake Manifold
Injectors
ECU
Uncut Harness
Fuel Rail
Power Steering Pump
Throttle Body
Exhaust Manifold
Alternator
Turbo
Starter
5 Speed Transmission
Clutch Disk
Flywheel

I know some other things i will need ar going to be:
Battery
Radiator
Intercooler
...
After that im not sure what else, do you guys mind helping. Its basically just going to be a daily driven car and maybe street raced.

Do you have to have an intercooler in order for the motor to start? If you run without one will it hurt the engine?
Ive read that its just that heat and whtever, but what if my car doesnt have a hood? :naughty:

Will i be able to atleast push 270hp with boost turned to 11psi and some other basic mods?

Any other things i should consider? Thanks in adanced.

Everyone here frowns upon street racing so don't do that. Its not a good idea and it makes car enthusiast look like a** holes lolz.. Of course you can start the engine without an intercooler. If you didn't know that then you must not know how an engine works.. If your asking if it's a good idea to run a turbo charged engine without it then the answer is no it isn't.. I'm not sure why you'd take the hood off and dd a car.. I don't know TO MUCH about boosting but i think you get around 10 hp for every psi give or take... You still got alot of research to do man.

1- Yes, you will want to have an intercooler if you're driving it. It's not gonna hurt it if you run without just for a test start/idle, but don't run without one, period. It's dumb.

2- No. You will need to upgrade the turbo/injectors to do it right.

3- Get someone who has done the swap before, or at least someone that knows what they're doing. If you're doing this on your own, you're just going to get frustrated. That will lead to half-assing things and creating more problems for yourself.

well since you seem new at all of this i would suggest you do it as simple as you can to start. if you want an SR20 cool i would suggest that you order a silvia/180sx front clip. it should have every thing you would need to get it going, or close to it. You will be able to see where every thing goes. take lots of pictures before and during the tear down process so you have reference material for when you get lost or confused. and if you decide that an SR clip is too pricey for you try picking up a wrecked 240sx any year preferably 91-94 that is like yours ie hatch or coupe. then just swap stuff over. also you can go to a junk yard and disassemble one of there 240's so you do not have to worry about breaking your stuff.

I bought a 92 hatch shell stripped most of the way down. it has most of the interior and wiring but it was all pulled and piled up in the car when i got it. i have a parts car to provide me with all the nuts and bolts and to show me where all those little bits go. and i can source any missing bolts from it. once i am done with it i will scrape it.

I hope i gave you a little incite. Good luck

^ This. A whole front clip is your best bet. Believe me, my first sr that clip saved my a$$ a lot of money in the end. Good luck.

get a front clip if you have the money..

Don't install the SR into the 240 right away though, replace small maintenance parts.
Water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, oil pump etc.
It will be easier to work on when the motor isn't in the car yet.

Pull your stock motor out, and just pay attention to how everything works.. it's simple once you figure it out for yourself.

This and other builds on this site will help you a lot. I did the same swap in my car and i was clueless when i started. Everything you need is right here with enough searching and reading. Mine turned over first try.

HOWEVER, if i could go back and do it all over, i would take all the money i spent on my SR and the boatload of parts i bought with it, and just rebuild my KA into a reliable KA-T. You don't know what shape your SR will be in. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do with it.

if the clutch disc that comes with it is at all worn (ie not brand new), get a new clutch. Its easier to do it while the engine is out and its not too expensive. Plus you can upgrade to a stage one (still full face - not puck) if you plan on increasing boost a bit.

But before you do anything grab the FSM for your car and the SR engine, and read as much as you can on the forums

and as for 270hp, you'll need an S14/S15 T28, most likely S15
