Title says it all. The power steering in my 240sx is very... powerful. I can steer the car with simply two fingers. On my older 89, the steering was a little more "rugged" requiring a few more fingers to steer the car. As a result, there is little feedback and I feel an [emotional] distancing between me and the road. I'd like to tighten it down, if possible, allowing the need for a little more effort to turn the wheel.

A little more elaboration: The wheel doesn't have much play in it, it's merely easy to steer. The car was also just aligned, so it's not that.

I posted about this on the 240sx tech page (figured it was wiser to post here since this really isn't a mod question) and got some good responses. Notably, I'm told there is a tensioner of sorts below the driver's side on the steering rack. Unfortunately, I don't have the Nissan Technical manual to find it (I've got the Chilton's one). Since I've never worked on anything like the steering, I'd like to get it right the first time.

Can someone support this insight, yes this is the way to go or no? If so, can a more precise definition of its location be given, a technical drawing or picture?

Thanks guys!

hi, Kirk

You can get the FSM in the 240 forum. Go to the ST section, and go to page ST 21-22... There you can adjust the pinion torque.... which is what your looking for, its a fairly delicate procedure, so dont go in there and just crank the bolt, otherwise the rack may bind when its cold.

Sure thing.

It'll be a few. Other things pressing to work on (like repainting and repairing the spoiler, and then sealing it on for all eternity against all water intrusions). Car isn't aligned quite right anyway, it seems. The body shop was supposed to do an alignment, but she keeps pulling left now that I've got her back.

We shall all see in time.
