Hi,

I have just swapped a 1996 JDM engine into my 1990 300zx. The engine will start and idle but it idles real rough like it's misfiring but at higher RPMs, the car sounds fine. I was wondering if the 1990 ECU that I had was compatible with the 1996 engine. I know in 1996 things was switched over to OBD II but in the case of the JDM engine, would the OBD II really matter?

I am about to do the timing on the engine and a full tune up and start from there to see if that may be causing the rough idle. I tried turning the CAS to get the timing to 15 BTDC but it will only get as close as 20 deg and I'm not able to turn the CAS anymore. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Thanks ahead of time.

Is teh timing belt properly lined up? If its off, then everything else will be and you could damage your motor. I would start there.

That's exactly what I'm checking on the motor next. Going to go ahead and time it just to make sure.
