Hello all,

I live in Montana in a small town where dirt roads out number paved. I go through struts about every 1.5 - 2.0 yrs on my 1990 maxima. My rear springs are definitely sagged to about 1.0 inches lover than the front.

Are there any new springs/struts that are stock height and rugged/ tuneable? I do not want to lower the car any as cleance in the winter is essential.

thanks

Jim

As I recommended in your other thread, head over to Sport Compact Only.com.

I've heard great things about Tokico Illuminas, which are adjustable. You may also want to check out coilovers if your springs are bad as well.

The only adjustable suspenson produced for the 90 maxima is the Konis.there are no coilover setups produced for it either. What you may be able to do is use a "Coil over strut" setup from a 95-00 cavalier but that will require some tinkering to make work, and you will need to use a regular strut housiing.some thing like this http://www.affsales.com/dsp_pa...=1001or if you want to get spendy and want better springshttp://www.affsales.com/dsp_pa...=1001

it's just a theory BTW I haven't attempted it yet due to lack of money.but stock for stock, the max and the cavalier had the same spring rate and free height, and both have the same diameter strut housings in monroe.

I think the general consensus on struts for a 3rd gen (89-94) are Koni (most expensive, but far and away the best) followed by Tokico and KYB. Brian mentioned that Konis are the only adjustable ones available for our cars.

At the stock height, I think all of those should be great upgrades over OEM replacements. If you lower it with say Eibach springs (doesn't sound like you want to) some people have had Tokicos and KYBs go bad. The struts do have a lifetime warranty (doesn't count labor).

You didn't say if you had a GXE or an SE, but I believe the SEs have a slightly stiffer stock spring and that might be a mild upgrade for you. Internetautomart can probably correct me if I am wrong.

FWIW, I have Eibach springs and Tokico struts (along with ST rear sway bar and front and rear strut tower braces). Outstanding handling all the way around. It is stiffer, but handles bumps much better and feels much more "planted." The Eibachs only lower the car 1.2 inches, so it's not really slammed.
