1990 300ZX won't shift to 3rd mid-motion?????

This is my first time in the Z-forum, but I am a very active member on the Q45 forum in Nico. I hope you guys can give me some good advice. My brother has 1990 300ZX (non-turbo) Auto that doesn't shift into 3rd from 2nd gear while in motion. His mechanic says that it is a solenoid, but has not elaborated what solenoid it is (AT or shifter etc).Can you guys give me some advice as to which solenoid has gone out? Also, would he have to buy the entire pack, or can he get solenoids individually?Last question, I have seen solenoids for sale on the internet, and they give you a choice between lower and upper. Which one would the 3rd gear one be?

evan, sorry I didnt reply to your IM, i left my computer and forgot to check it, and then you signed off.

anyway, heres a page from the FSM.



As you can see for 3rd gear to engage, both shift solenoid A and B need to be OFF... As you can also see, from the 1-2 shift, shift solenoid A turns off, then from 2-3, shift solenoid B turns off...

You can verify this with a VOM by testing the circuit... So my guess is something is goofy with shift solenoid B... Check your trans codes to verify.
