Postby pasandon » Mon Oct 26, 2020 9:11 am

I'M LOOKING FOR ADVISE FOR MY 300ZX. 5 SPEED MANUAL IS Grinding THRU GEARS
Should I rebuild this original tranny, or look for a replacement… possibly a six speed??

You wont find a direct swap 6 speed and will end up paying $$$ to have one fitted. There are lots of good condition 5 speeds out there for sale for fairly cheap, you should try to find one locally because the shipping will be $$$ too.

I crossed that road a couple of years ago. The third and fourth gear syncronizers are weak in these trannys.

Rebuild would've cost about $800. For about $1,100 I bought the Z1 Motorsports JDM tranny, which has stronger syncros for a long life. Combined it with Z1 short shifter and it's a dream.
