I recently swapped out the 1997 Vlsd unit out of my 98 se 240 for a 1990 300zx n/a Vlsd. My question is is the gear ratio different or not. I checked everything that I knew to check, and I thought that they were the same, but I figuared that being a 300 vlsd that it would be stronger, but my journey out to the track this last week left me unplease with the turnout, compaired to last years times. I had some terrable starts but I'm trying to cover all my bases before I get back out there this Thursday and dissapoint myself again.

The ratios are the same (4.08:1). The Turbo 300zx has a smaller ratio (3.62:1 I believe)

[/quote] As far as I know they are the same internally, the only difference being the output flanges for the half-shafts (5-star pattern on the 300, and 6-bolt triangle pattern on the 240) but I could be mistaken.

SloMoe - You are correct on the ratios being the same as far as the internals go I am not sure, but the 300ZX TT ration is 3.92:1

TT Z32: 3.86: 1 (uses 5-bolt flanges, not compatible with 240s, need to get 240 VLSD output shafts)NA Z32: 4.06: 1 (ditto to above)J30: 3.96: 1 (95+ use 6 bolt star flanges which will bolt up to all 240s)

Internals are the same on all, they are all VLSDs, which mean they have sealed viscous clutch packs inside. They do not require any special fluids, etc.

For anyone else searching for this info, there is a write up in the install page here: lsd info. They mentioned that the J30 has the same gear ratio but it is different, it does say which ones need new output flanges.
