Hey! Remember me?

When the clutch is depressed, the shifter will go into gears, but when the clutch is released and the gas depressed, there is no movement of the car. The engine revs. Is this a failure of the clutch or the transmission?

Thx!

Try shifting with the engine running, except do not push the clutch pedal in. If you can shift in and out of the gears it is most likely a clutch or pressure plate issue. If you grind, then it should be a transmission problem (though you dont want to grind for more than a milisecond). It could however be either or both if you have serious enough internal transmission damage...

either the clutch blew up or its a hydraulic problem. im thinking hydraulic problem. in either case, its not the transmission

Hubby started the engine up and could NOT move between gears without using the clutch. Our mechanic thought the clutch was slipping, but we need to write an ad for a potential buyer and need to understand if the clutch and/or transmission is shot, so we can provide as much up-front info. as possible.

Thx!

I would say its your transmission. There is an extreme possiblity of your clutch blowing up, but its almost unheard of on a factory stock car. There are no mods on it, correct?

Right -- no mods. Geesh, I was afraid of this. It's bad enough the engine of about 180K started burning oil we think about 8 months ago. Hubby heard a tapping sound while driving home and realized the oil was low.

Its not expensive to fix a transmission, some cheapo garages will charge about $400 in labor to put one in of good working order (possibly less). If hubby is not opposed to getting dirty and pulling his own replacement from the junkyard, the whole thing could be fixed for much less than $1K: thats worst case scenario being the clutch is blown.

Ok push the clutch and have someone look under the car on the passenger side of the trans. If the slave moves against the clutch fork the hydrolics are good. Has the clutch been slipping lately such as in 5 gear full throttle does the RPM on the Tach rise and speed of the vehicle stay constant than the clutch is fried. New clutch kit should cost about $100-150 and a few hundred more for a install is a reasonable price. If trans is making odd noises/grinding than its the trans. Most likely there should be warning signs when a trans goes and you would most likely drop gears, not all of them at the same time. It could be as simple as a broke clutch fork.
