I had my shifter rebuilt? Mechanic said it needed new bushings. Then I changed over to a rebuilt 5 speed trans.

Ever since......I can almost feel the gears when shifting into 1st and 2nd.

It is sometimes smooth; but mostly it takes force.

The shop said it is normal and will break in.It's been a year.

Is the shifter supposed to be something to fight with?Is there a way to smooth it out?

I have copied this to technical. I think this is the wrong forum.

I think I've got a similar problem.

Does it shift even worse when it is cold?

Second gear is pretty tough in the cold, first is always bad(although I've heard that's normal) and third is ok mostly but sometimes feels like you can feel the synchros spin against eachother as they come together.

No idea what the problem is, changed transmission fluid to redline, didn't get better at all, maybe even worse. Perhaps, a problem with the clutch?

Does it grind when you try to get in to gear, or is there just some resistance? Nissan gearboxes aren't like Hondas, and they tend to be quite notchy and mechanical feeling.

I do agree that shifting in to 2nd can be rough on cold days until things warm up. That, AFAIK, is the result of worn synchros.

You might want to try some fancy gear oil, like Redline MT-90. Might smooth things out a bit.
