hi, well my girlfriend just got a new used 240sx and its starting to get some problems. well problem #1 the temp. sensor in the gauge cluster dose not work. it worked at first then it started to just go haywire and flop around. then it just droped to the bottem and stays their any solutions??? i live in az and it gets hot and i dont want to blow the head gasket because of this. #2 it is noisy *** hell ive tryed to pinpoint the location of the noise but i just cant tell the alternator belt is new and it has no ac so i thought it was the ps belt so i bought a new one and installed it. well it did not help, it sounds like someone is scraping their nails on a chalkboard another noise i hear is a squeek sound but the sounds are not constent i notised that one pully wables very little. #4 sometimes it runs really ruff like i rev the engine and the rpms fall and then they shoot up and then backfires it seems to me like its getting flooded. #5 the clutch is very noisy i think it is the throwout bearing because when im in first push in the cluch it makes like a grinding noise in reverse also another thing dose anyone knnow how to adjust the cluch peetle. thanks alot for you help need to fix i dont want my girl to sell it

wow where to start...for the temp gauge.. I would check the sensors and connections...I believe there are two of them..front of engine, passenger side of middle by the thermostat housing...most common prob I have seen so far for that....

Lets see...for the clutch pedal .. there is a rod at the top of it that connects/actuates the clutch master..there should be a (silver) nut that you will have to back off then spin the rod until you get it where you want it then tighten the nut again.. (tighten and loosen will be backwards..trust me..)

As for the noises .. its hard to say without hearing them or some kind of idea of when and how they sound. Like does it coincide with revving ie get faster ...or louder..

hope some of this helps ya

Does it sound like a whistle at all? Can you tell where it is coming from..like top bottom .. inside .. outside..accesories? driver or pass side? I think 800 is about right..someone else should be able to tell you.. I am still tryin to get mine to idle...lol...I have a vaccuum leak that whistles loud until you give it gas then it gets quieter and idle bounces back and forth from 500-1200..so go fig..but anyway..

if you can narrow it down a little you can take a screwdriver and use it as a stethoscope if its internal or sounds like its coming from say an alt or p/s compressor.. put the end on what you want to listen to..(be careful of moving parts) and cup the other end to your ear .. that can help narrow down where its coming from..

sorry I cant help more without really hearing it ya know.. try a search for idle or misfire maybe for more ideas..

one of the things you might want to check out is your timing chain. That can be a serious problem and seems like from what you've described it's coming from around the right area for it to be the chain. As for anything else, I'll have to think a little bit more. Hope this helps (and 800 rpm for an idle is right where it should be)

well, if you can locate that the noise is coming from the front of the engine and (I might be wrong) the top to middle of the engine... that would be a more definate possibility of the chain... another thing that you could do is to see if there are any small pieces of plastic in your oil pan... they may or may not come out in an oil change.... and to get the oil pan off you have to at least lift the engine, if not remove it :-/

But, I would say that if the noise can be limited to the front of the engine and it's not any of the accessories (ie you've done the stethoscope thing to locate the noise) then it'd be a good bet that your chain is going and will soon cause a lot of damage to your engine... and you might want to get someone else's opinion that looks at it in person that knows more about cars than you (either a friend or a mechanic)

i kinda dont think its the timing chain because its not sounding from the front/middle of the engine im pritty sure its some accessories i just have to get around to buy an stethoscope or just take it to my mechanic. ill see what happens.
