You have to have the ECU reprogrammed. Jim Wolfe does this for about $575, as does Stillen.

Why bother removing it at all on a stock engine?

There is some point to removing it. But only if you are a crazy mother f**ker that wants to die by going over 117 on a stock 12 year old car. I hit 117 and yes, my 90 s13 could probably hit 130. But i sure as hell wouldnt want to. You hit a squirrel at that speed and you could roll. Please, dont kill your innocent 240 just because you are a nutball.

And I reiterate, is there a point?

The point is that when you are cruising the interstate at about 85 and there is no one around but you and this set of headlights that comes up from behind and tries to **** with you but you downshift and pull away from them, only to be cut short at about 110 b/c you don't want to have your motor shut off and they pass you laughing the whole time and it just wants to make you rip your ecu out and piss on it, until you pass them a few minutes later pulled to the side of the road in handcuffs. :D

I would really be interested to see how fast my car would go but I can't b/c of the stupid governor. I can hit about 110 in fourth so I know there is more to be had after 117+-. As for worrying about going too fast and losing control, I drive 100+ on backwoods country roads with curves and whatnot regularly. I doubt that doing 130 or more on an open highway would be a problem. I take good care of my 12 year old car and especially keep an eye out for worn suspension and steering parts. I just put a new set of tires on it and it feels rock solid at extreme speeds.

As for the wire to cut on the ECU, I tried what was in a posting on 240sx.org's FAQ section a while back, only to have my speed limiter kick in around 70 or something. The system is redundant. Not only does it check for speed but it also ties in to the transmission and will cut you off depending on what gear you are in and your revs.

You are screwed, spend the money and get your ECU reprogrammed.

Dear Professor Lost,

Top speed is not only a function of gearing but also has a lot to do with wind resistance and HP. Many 4 bangers do not have the nuts to wind out 5th gear. May not be as big of a problem in our 240's b/c they at least look like they have good aerodynamics, but I know that my Honda runs out of steam well before the red line.

Damn you professor chaos! :batman

OK, that was the info I was trying to pry out of you. So, if what you are saying is true: My car does about 72 mph in 5th gear @ 3,000 rpm. Double the rpm's and double the speed, that would be about 144 mph @ 6,000 rpm and I think the rev limiter is at 6,700(Not for sure but it's somewhere around there).

OK hang on, let's get it a little more precise (72/30=2.4, so for every 100 rpm there would be 2.4 mph, 67*2.4=160.8)

So you are saying that my car could do about 160mph if I removed the governor? That's damn fast. I don't think she could do it.

As for the Honda comment. Yes, I have a Honda. A very stock 97' Accord. Never drive it unless I'm taking the ski to the beach or if I am in need of extra passenger room. It's an automatic and will put you to sleep behind the wheel. It kills me to know that I can do 130mph towing a trailer on the interstate and I can't do over 110 in my 240. Not that I drive 130 with the trailer on a regular basis but it was interesting to see if it would do it. Ever see the look on a Celica owner's face when you pull away from them at a light with a trailer in tow? Me either, he couldn't keep up enough for me to see his face. Anyway, I like my Honda for what it is, even though I plan to sell it soon to buy a mid 90's 300ZX 2+2.:D

Damn, where'd you come up with all those figures? That was what I was getting at all along. Like I said in an earlier post, most 4 bangers don't have the nuts to redline in top gear.

So I will refer you back to my original statement,"I would really be interested to see how fast my car would go but I can't b/c of the stupid governor"

When I was driving mine on the way back from AZ where I got it (I live in CA) I opened it up and thought I'd hit the 136 it's supposed to do. Only for it to jerk and stop at 120mph. 120 isnt bad at all though. 130+ would be nice, but I can settle for 120 (at least with this engine). I might get my ECU reporgramed to fix it. No big deal man. The governer isnt much lower than your top speed anyway.

Also, my truck (1997 Nissan 4sp AUTO) would redline 4th gear at 172mph! It didnt have a governer, but it couldnt pull past about 115mph anyway. MOST cars have a drag limited top speed, not rev limited.

My car Pisses me off too, the rev limiter in fourth gear is at about 75-80 mph, which makes it really hard to pass, and 5 gear the rev limiter cuts it at about 3250 rpm about 85 mph or so, but I have had the car up to about 105. The speedo is broke, which makes the engine light come on so I thought it might be cutting me off sooner than the actual limits.... ANY info about a fix for this... besides paying $500 dollars for someone to reprogram??

Thanks!

You rev limiter cuts in at 75-80 in 4th? I've had mine up to 100 in 4th and it never kicked in. In fact I've never had the rev limiter kick in. Did 91's come with a rev limiter?
