hey, yesterday i drove 300 miles to north carolina to pick up a 1990 240sx. it had been sitting around for 4 months, but it ran good.well i got about 60 miles into to drive back, and the car slowly died. it kept cutting on and off tho. i got it towed to a shop. they hooked a multimeter up to my alternator (as did i) and its defintally putting out current. i bought a new battery also. so i thought everything was find and dandy, then my car dies again. well ****, at least i have an extra battery.

ok, someone please tell me. if my alternator works, and is brand new, and my battery works. WTF.i replaced my distributor cap, spark plugs, and cleaned a good bit of the rust off the the pos/neg hookups for the battery. after that i was able to drive around town, then back home with no problem until about 2 miles from my house. so it definatly got better.

someone, please help me. dont let this 240 go to waste

***Basically*** i have a brand new battery and alternator, that are both functional. battery is at like 12.7 volts, alternator is at like 14.5 voltsalthough the alt looks like its installed a little sideways? it still should be charging the battery

so you can like see the lights get dimmer when it starts to cut out????

when it shuts off, does it do it quick, or is it kind of slow.. Does it seem like the engine is short of fuel or something?

it slowly cuts off, i can tell about 7 mins ahead of time when its going to die. yes, it comes to the point of hitting the brakes and the lights getting dimmer.

yes, a very big power loss

update: the belt on the alternator just broke. it didnt look too good anyways. this is defintally my problem.

but upon further inspection i noticed that the alternator looks like its pushed back into the motor, making the belt c*** sideways. which defintally doesnt look right. this could be wearing out the belts and causing them to slip at higher rpms.

anyone have a fix?

OK so its not an engine problem.

Youll have to replace your alternator, i bet it was replaced inproperly.. Its hard to say how to fix it, except maybe they didnt ues a 240 one.....

well, i basically did a full tuneup on the engine. the guy i bought it from had already done one, but guess what i found?

spark plugs were loose enough to turn with your hand. valve cover gasket was VERY loose on there, i took the screws out with extreamly little force, distributor cap was ****ed, air filter was ****ed. etc. im basically having to rebuild this engine.

ill try buying a new alt, well see what happens.

***also. when i rev it up, a small-medium amount of smoke comes out. but at idle its fine. any idea? im thinkin valve seals but who knows? its been sitting for 4 months

update: whoever replaced the alternator on this car is a moron. i took the fan shroud off and got a closer look at it. the damn tension bracket was broken and bent to hell and back. hell, when i got the replacement bracket, i didnt know what it was at first.

the car appears to be running fine now, it doesnt burn oil any more. the only different thing i noticed is that it has a higher idle. odd
