are you sure its unburned gas and oil, assuming you have a cat those both would be reacted. i suppose it could happen, but its probobly more likely that it is water condensation with carbon in it so it appears black. smell it to see if it smells like fuel.

timing is supposed to be 20 BTDC

umm, he's got the 1990 SOHC KA24e engine

soo

timing should be 15 +/-2 BTDC @ norm idle speed of 750 +/- 50 RPMs

get rid of the bosch platinum +4s... they suxorz... if u wanna stay platinums, go w/ bosch single platinum instead. or just revert back to copper plugs: bosch super or ngk v-powers are good choices.

daily driver? stay w/ 8mm, but if u got enuff $ to splurge on bling bling 10 mm wires, then go 4 it, i guess <shrugs>

haha, you beat me to it. I keep the service manual right next to this comp too... But yeah thats it. Then again, I have a 90 that idles at about 850-900 most of the time and I get complimented on how low that is (most KA24Es I've seen idle at 1k or higher). I did recently get it back down to 750 spot on when I replaced a bunch of stuff though.

u betta get a timing light & set it correctly!

oh, as for the oil... 10w30 is fine... heck u can go 10w40 or 20w50 if your rings are "toast" (u can verify that easily w/ a compression/leakdown test...)

ps: plugged cat? how did u check on that? if u r by autozone, u can rent a vaccuum gauge & test, i can't recall how u do it for a plugged egr/cat rite now... it's late.

as for finding out i had a new muffler put on we cut the pipe right up to the cat i can see the build up pretty thick and i can wash my white car if i drive it to work and back for 2 days then my back bumper is black with carbon or unburnt gas im thinkin i might have got that prb but well i held a piece of paper by muffler reved once or twice just soaked the piece of paper well tweeked the timming higher and het hardly no splatter what do you all think that could be besides rings i dont think its rings ?
