Hey guys, my first post here, I have been lurking for a while, and unfortunately it has to be this one. I have searched long and hard and cannot find out what is wrong with my car.

So the story goes.. I was driving on the interstate at 70 mph and all the sudden my car dies, no smoke or anything, the motor still turns fine because it is in gear so i pull it out of gear and pull over. Of course it won't start, it turns over fine, but i can't hear any firing at all.

I have so far checked for spark, good; cylinders are getting fuel, maybe at the wrong time, but spark timing is definitely fine; the starter is also in perfect working order, it was replaced 4 months ago. Cylinders are all getting good compression as well. Oil is also fine.

The motor was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago and has run perfectly since then. The only thing out of the ordinary prior to the breakdown was a slight, occasional, and quiet ticking that is definitely not timing chain guide, i know this because that was the cause for the rebuild. The ticking could have been valves, but I'm not sure.

Of course this had to happen during finals week at college, leaving me royally screwed. Any ideas/suggestions/solutions are much appreciated.

hey bro,

first thing i would do is check all ur fuses. tap on relays lightly when you get to check the junction box near battery side. check for spark; remove one spark plug and plug to end of spark plug wire. next, hold wire with spark plug close to metal on valve cover. have someone crank over. if you do not see spark then follow next procedure. be care ful when holding spark plug wire when testing. wrap with rag where you grip to prevent shock. lots of voltage. if no spark, try to diagnose around coil pack area. check for anything loose or frayed. if it seems ok REPLACE COIL PACK.

if it still doesnt work from here, move to diagnosing fuel system. easiset way to check fuel system is to spray a lil carb cleaner towards the throttle body. perform this step if you've done above and still doents crank over.if from here it starts briefly, it can be anywhere from FUEL PUMP problem to injectors.

e-mail me bro if you got it going or have any questions.

It's probably a problem at the distributor aka wrong timing as you've pointed out. Does it fire up at all?

If it's a SOHC, the tapping sound is most likely from the lifters, did you bleed the air out of them when you rebuilt the engine? As for it dying though, and out of the blue no less, it may be a more serious problem or could be something as simple as a ground for the ecu.

Did you notice anything else that was weird with the car before it going kaput? Does the car start now or was it just a one time deal?
