Which side on the Automatic Transmission (A/T) is the input line and which is the output line?

I want to add a Magnefine filter this week. I have looked at all the Technical Service Bulletins I have and found two posts by Maxnix that contradict each other, No offence.

Passenger side is the ATF return.

I believe the ATF flows top to bottom in the tanks, but will have to check.

I was thinking about removing the fuel pump fuse and cranking it over a couple of times to remove all the fuel from the fuel lines to prevent the engine from starting. Then I would remove the A/T Cooler lines and make sure all the fluid is drained out. Then I would add bags in the lines. Then I would crank it over for a few seconds and see which zip lock bag is full of fluid.

Any definite answer would be appreciated!

As I recall the fluid flows from the transmission through the OEM filter, then through the radiator for cooling, then back to the transmission. The OEM filter for the Phase II cars has a single line in and dual lines out that go to the dual lined radiator, then back to the transmission.

I know and I wish I kept the OEM design or took pictures of it. But I never had a OEM A/T cooler filter installed on my car. Some 1992 and all 1993 Q45's have duel "Cooler" tanks for the A/T.

on the 90-93 cars with single inlet and outlet cooler lines, just find the best spot{easy to get to, not in harms way once filter is spliced in} on any of the 2 lines and make your cut- then attach your baggies to the 2 ends and have friend start the car- the line gushing will the be the input to the magnefine, the other will be the outlet side of magnefine.......no need to pull fuse or all that jazz, as the at only pumps 3-4 quarts per minute at idle speed and you only need 5-10 seconds to do your test{ 10-20 ounces of atf in baggie over the 5-10 seconds}

Here's a picture of the 94-96 model filter. The red V points to an output line.

Thanks a ton but I don't have a filter on my car. My current setup is a simple B&M cooler with two lines rather than the four lines on the OEM duel "Cooler". But I have no way of knowing which line on the cooler is input and which is output.

It has been said many times over that the A/T oil pump pushes the fluid out and does nothing pulls the fluid in.

Bring your vehicle to Goodyear and leave it to the professionals. Then sell and put money into retirement fund.

Actually it is for heating cold ATF up to operating temperatures sooner so early shifts are smooth. We add auxiliary ATF coolers to cool to lower than 195° F coolant levels.
