Welcome to NICO.

In the 89-90 240sx's, the factory motor produced 140hp at the crank. The motor was the KA24E, the single overhead cam precursor to the KA24DE, which produced the 155 crank hp you've obviously heard about. So, given that the previous owner replaced a KA24E and not a KA24DE, and that the motor is about 15-16 years old, even with a rebuild, you can expect that it produce around 135hp at the crank.

Now, if it's producing 135hp at the wheels, you're probably in luck, and the owner swapped in the slightly newer KA24DE. Given 15-20% drivetrain loss, a stock DE motor could, if rebuilt correctly, make right around 130-135hp at the wheels.

Hope this helps!

First off, you need to find out which motor is in your car. The KA24E or the KA24DE. If it is the E, it is a single over-head cam engine and I have yet meet anyone who has made decent power out of it. I would choose to do a motor swap in that case. The most popular/cheaper swaps would be the CA18, SR20, and the KA24DE. As long as you did the work yourself you could keep the costs under $2k. Just do your research and ask questions to figure which swap you would want to go with.

I suggest getting familiar with driving before concerning yourself with huge power.

If I were to do it over again starting at 16 when I bought my 240, I would have done: Tires, suspension, brakes, clutch, flywheel, Limited slip. After thats done, if the KA you have is in good condition then I would turbo that.... even the single cam KA can make enough HP to make you happy.

I would have gone KA if mine wasnt an automatic ($500 for 5 speed swap/$2k or so for turbo). Instead I bought an rb20 for $1700, its all about your preference and your situation.
