1989 Nissan 240sx rear hatch lock problem.

I have a problem with the rear hatch lock mechanism on my 240.
There's a clip on the assembly that keeps falling off, rendering the key useless.
It has even fallen off after my mechanic attached it.
Has anybody out there had this problem, and if so what did you do about it?
