1989 240sx- the engine won't respond when I hit gas pedal

Alright, so today I ended up getting stranded on the side of the road because my engine wouldn't respond when I hit the gas pedal. I was at a stop light, and when I hit the accelerator the engine weakly and unevenly responded at first, and then stop responding entirely. As far as I can tell, gas wasn't getting to the engine, and I feel pretty confident that the fuel filter just needs to be replaced, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to hear some other opinions. I just purchased the car not even a month ago, and the guy had warned me that he had just cleaned out the gas tank, and that some debris might have been left behind. Anyways, thanks for your time and input.

EDIT: After sitting on the side of the road for an hour I was able to drive it home without any problems.
