I don't have the FSM handy, but going from CourtesyParts.com, I created a list of things i'd need to get for the timing chain job on my KA24E. I decided to exclude a lot of things on their "kit", and just went for what I thought would be adequate. Can someone give this list a glance over to see what things I might be missing? I've read in old threads the sprockets should be replaced too, along with the locking pin. Here's my list:

Timing ChainTiming Chain Guide - Tension SideTiming Chain Guide-Slack Side For Production July 1988 to March 1989Timing Chain Guide - Tension Side BoltTiming Chain Guide - Tension Side Bolt (looks different from the one above)Front Crankshaft Oil SealFront Cover Oil SealTiming Chain TensionerSilicone gasket maker

It sounds like something is hitting my valve cover, so I'm assuming the guides are destroyed. I'm just trying to compile a nice list of parts that will get me through the job. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i have two SOHC KAs u can have for $160 picked up. im just trying to get rid of them but everybody keeps flaking. both engines ran before i pulled them. one of them has an oil leak near the filter and its valve cover was removed by me (sold it). if you take both of them ill even throw in two transmissions that are good for rebuild, FREE. the SOHC transmission grinds slightly, and the DOHC transmission shifts but has some input shaft endplay. why wait for the parts, when u have two engines at your disposal for parts (either to sell or to spare)? im located in fairfield, california. i can DELIVER for $200 obo.

i really dont want to part out the motors but if u need parts, i could part them out individually for a fair deal. feel free to come by and take a look at them. later man!

jdm_master_X , I might take you up on that offer. My number is 510 717 6628

I opened up the valve cover and looked down the chain. Everything looked intact. Guides looked good, chain had little slack. The noise coming from the engine doesnt sound like a chain hitting anything either. It's more of a knocking sound, like dense plastic pipes hitting against each other. I did notice, however, my underdrive crank pulley is wobbling severely. Im not sure what to do, but I think the problem is more severe than a timing chain job. What's funny is that the car runs fine-I made an 80 mile trip from Davis to the Bay Area. Any help would be great. Thanks all.

I would honestly just pick up a timing kit from your local auto parts store - it's a couple hundred bucks cheaper and worked just fine for me in my old motor.

Other than that, your list looks good. Make sure you get both oil seals for the front cover, and I think that both bolts for the tension side are the same....
