i just bought a 89 240 with a sohc 2400 in it, when i got it it had a torn radiator hose, and i fixed it and it would run fine for like 10 minutes, then the temp would spike all the way up, after that i realized it didnt have an overflow on it and the hose running to the overflow was just hanging lettin all my water out, so for a quick fix i just stuck a bolt in the end of the hose with a hose clamp on it to stop the leak, then i had a radiator hose dragging the ground and it got a hole in it, so i cut the part out of the hose that had the hole, and hooked it back up, it ran fine till the hose started hitting my crankshaft pully and it wore a hole in it, well i replaced that whole hose and its not dragging or leaking or anything, and i drove it today and it ran hot all the sudden, so i pulled over and popped the cap and let all the pressure out and filled it back up with water and it ran fine all the way home, im really dumbfounded at what it could be, theres no coolant in my oil or vice versa, i know i need the overflow, but would the lack of that make it run hot like this? i know i ran it hot a few times, but it didnt run very hot, it would hit the line before the h and i would shut if off everytime, any advice would be great, thank you

you need to have some sort of over flow bottle it lets the system expand and contract , easiest fix is to go to the junk yard and find a mazda miata and take that coolant over flow and put that in (it fits perfect) cause all of the 240 overflow tanks are generally bad

Did you blead the system to get ALL the air out? Sound to me like you have air in the system. It can be a pain to get the air out of the system on these cars. Use the bleader screw on the intake as you fill the system and then run the car with the fround jacked up and the cap off.

You may have to do this a couple of times to be sure you have all the air out.
