hey guys i got a 1989 single cam fastbackthe problem i seem to be having is when i reverse or even drive forward and i turn the steering wheel a lot, and i switch it to drive and turn the steering wheel the other way, the car makes a ERRR sound. could it be a bushing problem? the sound is coming from the front end so im sure its from there. im sure its not powersteering because i noe wat that should sound like. what do u guys think it could be? could it be my tension rods?

i checked under the car and this bushing/rod seems worn. its right behind the front tires could this be the problem to my steering sound?

Check the fluid level on your power steering reservoir. When turning the wheels causes a sound such as you describe it means your low on power steering fluid.

yup;

in addition, that thing you're pointing @ is the tension control arm... bushings can be purchased to replace them/ most likely need a press to do so or a set of "drifts" and a jack...

search from there...

the sound couldnt be power steering because its not continuous. it goes away wen it happens. and i dont go lock to lock for that to happen.is tension control arms the same as tension rods?

tension rods. Those guys usually result in a clanging and bumping kinda sound.

Is the sound more like a creaking or is it more like a whirring? creaking would lean me more towards the tension rods while the whirring would point me to the ps pump.

ooh, outer tie rod ends > tension rod bushings...

esp, if there's slight wobbling while driving.

i've driven on dry rotted tension control arm bushings for the longest time ~DD~ w/ no adverse effects, but if you got shot outer tie rods, the steering-wheel feeling of wobbliness sux.

u check the ps belt as well?

the weird thing is, i was told the car would act bad wen i have worn tension rods/outter tie rods. but im driving normal and it feels fine. only thing i notice is car kinda moves to the right a bit. it could just be the alignment.and is ps belt=power steering belt?

yeap... check the belt or all of them; doesn't hurt to check... other than the fluid level.

if it moves to the right a bit sometimes & not due to a "crown" on the road, then it usually starts that way...

you can prolong the outer tie rod ends a bit if you inject some grease into the torn tie rod ends w/ a needle adaptor on the greasegun...
