My coolant bypass hose (medium sized hose behind the power steering pump, just above where the upper radiator hose enters the block), sprung a leak and needs to be replaced .

Can anyone here give me a 1,2,3 on how to do this? Do i have to pull the intake collector to get to the other end of this thing? Looks like a PITA to do and i'm looking for any useful tips before i tackle this one. Any parts i should order other than the hose to get this done?

Thanks,

K

Well... I'm not sure exactly which hose you are talking about, or where it goes to, but...

To my knowledge, all coolant hoses are connected in basically the same fashion. They slip over a metal tube and are fasted on by tightening rings.

To replace... First off.. find out where the other end of the hose goes to.. Put down some plastic or newspaper underneath as you will most likely spill a little coolant on the floor. Use a flathead screwdriver to loosed the tightening ring. Then pull the end off. Find the other end of the tube and do the same to pull that end off... Then go to an auto parts store and find a replacement tube... reinstall...

Shouldn't be too tough to do.

Good luck. Let us know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for the input. Mostly i'm trying to find out if i have to pull the intake to replace this hose if it can be done without going to all that trouble.

I think i know what hose your talking about. It is on the thermostat housing, and its a fairly small hose (maybe 1/2in ID).. I dont think youll have to take the intake off. I woudl just cut the hose off, but before oding that make sure you can get to both ends. Youd hate to cut the hose and not be able to get to the other side..

Finally got this one done.

For those who may have a similar issue, you do not have to remove the intake collector or manifold to get to the bypass hose i was referring to. I had to remove both of the large plastic intake pipes and the power steering pulley, as well as both upper and lower radiator hoses, but after that it wasn't too bad. Putting a *small* drop of dish soap onto the inner diameter of the hoses makes them easier to get on in a cramped spot like this. Not too much though, you don't need soap suds flowing around in the cooling system.

From what i can tell, this hose connects to the block (right behind and above the thermostat outlet) and then curves around and connects to a metal pipe. From the diagrams i saw at the dealership, the other end of this pipe may connect to another rubber hose. If that hose goes, then i'd think you'd at least have to remove the intake collector to get to it. I don't know this for sure though as i can't see into that space and i'm just going on the parts department's diagrams.

For what it's worth, the FSM for the '89 240 sucks. It's still worth having (either download or dead tree variety), but it's no where near as complete as my Toyota or Ford FSMs. I couldn't find a single diagram or even mention of this hose within the entire book. The '94 Supra FSMs comprise three complete books (body & chassis, engine, electrical) and a forth for the automatic transmission, if you're so equipped. I'm not downing on Nissans, i love 'em, but i'm seriously hoping that the later Nissan manuals are much improved since '89.

BTW: thanks guys for your input, every little bit helps.
