There's a guy who owns an automotive place here in Winnipeg and I found a RHD Silvia and was inquiring about buying it. He said it's a customers car and that he's intending on finding a motor for it but apparently he doesn't know anything about the car really. He wants me to come take a look at it again when I get a day off work to give him my diagnosis on it and to see what it needs. He already knows that the engine is blown and I believe since it's a RHD, it was imported from japan so it has all the OEM parts a ca18det would (ca maf, ca18det ECU, etc).

Now here is my question. Is this actually a ca18det or an sr20det?

Thanks.

CA, SRs came later. That's lucky for you cause SRs suck! Check the tag on the firewall near the master cylinder to find out what it originally came with, it will say either CA18DE or CA18DET. DET is good because that means R200 LSD rear, CA18DE means R180 one-wheel-wonder.

The Mk2 S12 turbo's from japan came with CA18DET's, Mk1 turbos came with the CA18ET or FJ20ET.

*crosses fingers and hopes for a bubble

Hey TMS, can you hook me up with one of those one-wheel-wonder CA18DE diffs? More specifically the gears? Shoot me an email HERE.

Not likely. 87+ are Mk2, those S12's didn't have the FJ option AFAIK. If it does, it would be the non-turbo FJ.

it CAN be a S13. You need to find out what the firewall tag says.

http://www.zeppan.jp/nissan/silvia.htmh ... /180sx.htm

The first S13 Silvia sales catalog is for May of '88, although the 180SX wasn't released until March of '89.

At some point in the past this topic came up on this very forum, and it was shown that the S13 Silvia did exist in 88, if only for part of the year.

To back this up, Nissan FAST lists the production span of the S13 Silvia as being 05/88 - 10/93.

Two different generational releases of the same body, what's so weird about that? In japan it marked a slight style change (mostly front-end, grill, parking lights) and a motor change (FJ20ET -> CA18DET for example)

it's an S13 silvia. the owner talked of an RB swap one time, but i don't think the garage knows anything about that. i think he'd be on his own installing and wiring an RB in there.

well, not entirely on his own, he has this community.

well statisticly speaking most 88 silvias will be s13 since they were made for 2/3 of the year ...

you can always take a pic of the firewall tag, but you don't have to prove it, really. if you say it is, we're not going to argue. it's not like you can easily confuse a s12 and s13 when you're looking at them.
