Pictures might help us help you. On my old '91 Pathfinder, I remember having a bear of a time driving out the hinge pins because there was so much rust on the pins they would not easily slip through the bushings. There were O-clips at the ends of the pins that needed to be removed but I don't recall a cap on the top of the hinge pins. Your '88 was one of the original WD21 models and my '91 and a few changes so the hinge pins might be different. Post some pictures if you can.

Looks like it's bolted to the door, might unbolting it be an option? I think every car I've ever owned hinges were bolted on, but also seems like an early Sentra my son had long ago might not have been. Details are fuzzy but I do recall that door was not easy to adjust. But the parts image appears to show boltholes.

Never mind about the pictures. I've realized those pins in your '88 are the same as my old '91. The bushings I referred to, Nissan calls caps, but it doesn't matter. The "caps" are not your problem. The pins are a pain because they are press fit into the hinge at the knurled end on the pin near the head. You can see the knurled end in the picture here: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Nissan-8 ... B00BFE24PY
Once you remove the clip, the pin must be punched out of the hinge. If you're lucky, once the pin is punched out enough to clear the knurl from the hinge, the pin can be easily pulled out of the hinge. I was not so lucky on my '91 because the shaft of the pins on mine had so much built up rust on them that they would not pull out through the bushings. I mean caps. Whatever. Using PB Blaster https://www.amazon.com/Blaster-16-PB-Pe ... B000I2079E to dissolve some of the rust (let it soak for hours, spray it again, soak for hours more, repeat), I was finally able to punch the pins out of the hinge. Using a thin chisel, with a hammer, to wedge between the head of the pin and where in seats on the hinge to begin separating the pin from the hinge helped me get this task started. Good luck and be patient.
