Never mind about the pictures. I've realized those pins in your '88 are the same as my old '91. The bushings I referred to, Nissan calls caps, but it doesn't matter. The "caps" are not your problem. The pins are a pain because they are press fit into the hinge at the knurled end on the pin near the head. You can see the knurled end in the picture here:

Once you remove the clip, the pin must be punched out of the hinge. If you're lucky, once the pin is punched out enough to clear the knurl from the hinge, the pin can be easily pulled out of the hinge. I was not so lucky on my '91 because the shaft of the pins on mine had so much built up rust on them that they would not pull out through the bushings. I mean caps. Whatever. Using PB Blaster

B000I2079E to dissolve some of the rust (let it soak for hours, spray it again, soak for hours more, repeat), I was finally able to punch the pins out of the hinge. Using a thin chisel, with a hammer, to wedge between the head of the pin and where in seats on the hinge to begin separating the pin from the hinge helped me get this task started. Good luck and be patient.
