1988 D21 truck bad noise Timing chain???

Hi,

Have a 1988 d21 pick up 2.4 . 175,000 miles. Has slowly developed a bad clatter/scraping noise that sounds like maybe a loose timing chain. An old school nissan tech told me that there are guides that can be checked/replaced that doesn't require tearing the engine apart and might solve the problem. Please give me opinions and info on these guides and how to locate them and remove them to check. Thank you
