Hi,

Have a 1988 d21 2.4 175,000 miles. Has slowly developed a bad scraping/clattering noise which sounds like loose timing chain. Have been told there are guides that can be checked/replaced that you can do without tearing the engine apart and may solve the problem. Please give me info on these guides , where they are located, how to take them out to check and whether this may be the problem. Thank you

Everything is located behind the front timing cover. The KA and NAPS-Z have similar step involved in replacing the chain and its guides. We have lot of info floating around the forum on this topic.

I do not know if this is relevant or not, but I just got my truck for cheap because someone put a cheap a** timing chain set on my 88 Nissan that allowed the timing to skip and ruin the head. (it cut grooves between the cylinders backfiring as it was drove home)

I got another head used and a shop showed me the tensioner didn't even have a locking mechanism, just free floating. No wonder it skipped!

My only advice is to get good quality parts on the set and tensioner as it DOES make a difference.
