My friend's daughter's 1988 300ZX (non-turbo) won't crank. No clicking or other noise, but the security light flashes. Jumping off of a running vehicle changed nothing. We both understand old Chevrolets, but have no idea where to begin on this thing. It worked fine this afternoon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

bad starter, clutch saftey switch (or neautral saftey if it's an auto)

I talked to him by phone last night and he said that it's an intermittent problem, and that it works fine most of the time. On the occasions when it refuses to start, the security light flashes, so he thinks it may be a problem with the factory security system.

Is there any way to test the system itself? Or bypass it so she can at least use the car without worrying about getting stuck on the far side of town?

you can pull the security fuse to disable the OE system, and if the OE system goes off the horn should be honking
