I just purchased an 87 Stanza in wonderful condition but I need to change the Automatic Transmission fluid (it's looking dark.) I've googled the web and searched the forum for how much I'm going to need and if I can use any kind of Dexron (I, II, or III?) While I'm posting this, I'm also having what could be described as "Hiccups" while driving. Generally during the first few minutes of driving, the engine will jerk and the tach will drop for an instant, I think it's in the Plug/Plug wires but any other ideas would help. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, when looking at spark plugs, the site says intake and exhaust, does this mean I need 2 per cylinder?

Older nissans use "Matic-D" which is the equivalant to dexron II and III.

Yes you have 2 plugs per cyl on your 4 cyl so 8 plugs, 8 wires,2 coils. I have seen the caps cause numorous problems on those so take a look at it and the rotor. You have 2 different plugs on it bpr5 and bpr6 Intake uses the 6 and exhuast uses the 5.

Thank you very much, as soon as I get another paycheck I'll be able to afford the maintenance. Also, is there anything special about changing the AT Fluid that I should be aware of?

when yu first pull the plug try to catch a small amount of fluid you can "pan" through looking for silver flakes. Also save some from when it is just trickling out and look for metal in it then. If you have substantial metal in there this means the trans is suffering excessive internal wear.

Thanks again, I'll keep an eye out for the shavings. Because the car was owned by an elderly gentleman and his middle aged daughter for the history of the car so I'm praying that they drive like old people normally do (no offense to old people, it's just that most old people drive slow.)

I'm sorry to keep on with the questions but I was also wondering if there is a transmission fluid filter on the stanza and if I should replace it?

It is not your typical filter it is mearly a screen. If you go as far as pulling the pan off then yes you can pull the screen out and clean it with brake clean or some other cleaner that will evaporate fairly quickly. The trans pan should have a drain plug on it for drainning [ instead of pulling the pan]

God I hope it has a pin, if not though oh well. I'm probably going to run over to the auto hobby shop and get it up on a lift this weekend and take care of this. Again, thank you for all of your help on this!
