Should have posted here first. - my 1987 stock Maxima with a V6 (63K original miles) has a frustrating problem most noticeable when at cold idle. The engine RPM's drop constantly (very quick drop outs), but with no set frequency. Sometimes at cold it drops down so low that the steering wheel shakes, or the engine will even die. When the engine warms up, it is much less noticeable, but is still taking place. Holding a paper to the exhaust pipe, it will get sucked to the pipe when the drop-out occurs. I've replaced the plug wires and cap already. Any ideas? This had been occurring for quite some time now. Thanks.

Check all your vaccum lines for breaks or non-continuance. Basically, just make sure they aren't broken or have holes in them. Then, come back and report your findings.

I checked all the vacuum hoses - they all look and feel pretty good. I did notice fine cracks up at the connection points just where the hose and the end of the metal valves are at: the AIV control solenoid valve (top hose), the EGR control valve (top hose), and the BCDD unit, I believe. You wouldn't even notice unless you bend the hoses at those points. Possible culprits?

It's possible but only a large leak would cause this. Check the EGR guide tube for carbon blockage. I know it's a PITA to get to but it shouldn't take too long. If it's blocked, replace it.
