I'm not a VG guy per-se, but if you don't get alot of replies, keep looking, there is stuff here. Go through this forum, the VG forum, and the Z-car forum, as the Z31 had a sohc VG, too. Go back years in the archives if you have to, just to see.

The engine was the same from 86-89 for the most part, so you can search on any of those years.

The TBI manifold can be milled down and made to use a 2bbl carb, like a Holley 350/500. I know for a fact that the z24i ignition system works with a carb swap. I know this because there is a thread a few down the list from this one descrbing how to do it. What I suspect is that, being contemporaries of each other, the z24i and vg30i engine control systems are pretty similar, and would work similarly with carb swaps. Add some headers to the equation and you might have some more power.

I am no expert but from the old days of my ZXTT, I know the non turbo Z could get a few HP with header and cold air intake. But for real power adders you had to turbo or supercharge. Most engines these days do not get major power gains with bolt ons as the factory gets about the best out of it stock. The old days of intake headers and such are pretty good from the factory. Easiest cheapest power gain is nitrous, but it is not full time booster. The days of a few bolt ons making a good power gain are gone as stock intakes and exhaust are not as constricting as they were back in the old days.
