I'd pull the motor it's easier that removing the crossmember IMHO. When I pull the motor I support the trans with a ratchet strat passed under the trans and hooked on the firewall.

If you do it with the engine in the car you'll need to disconnect the rack completely, remove the ps and ac lines and you'll still have to wrestle around the trans and trans lines if its and auto, so I still say its easier to pull the motor if you have access to a cherry picker it's not that bad

I hear what your saying ... Why is the Cross member so Much harder to remove... there is only 4 Main Bolts to the Frame, and then with the Engine Pull,, you have to disconnect a lot more,, Headers,, intakes,, Fuel, Lines,,, wires etc..

Removal of the crossmember is pretty simple. Unbolt the 4 nuts (two on either side) holding the crossmember to the frame rails, then remove the two bolts securing your front control arms to the crossmember. Next remove the A/C and PS line brackets that bolt to the front of the crossmember. The steering rack can be left in place once it is unbolted from the crossmember, but once you begin to lower the crossmember down it will need to be supported somehow. I just placed a length of 2x4 or Floor Jack underneath it to hold the Rack and Pinnion in place.

How to Replace a 300ZX Oil Pan Gasket

Changing the oil pan gasket requires an engine hoist.

Maintaining proper oil levels in a vehicle is necessary if you plan on a long engine life. A common issue with maintaining proper oil levels is a leaking oil pan gasket. The Nissan 300ZX is no exception to this. When the oil pan gasket starts to leak, replacing the gasket is necessary. However, due to the placement of the cross member, the engine must be lifted upward to create enough room to remove the oil pan. Due to this, the job of changing the gasket on the Nissan 300ZX is a bit tricky

Things You'll Need::

Jack stands
Engine hoist
Wrench
Drain pan
Scraper
RTV gasket sealer
Felpro oil pan gasket
Engine oil

Instructions
1 Place the Nissan 300ZX onto four jack stands to allow room under the vehicle.

2 Connect the engine of the Nissan 300ZX to an engine hoist and apply slight pressure to the hoist chains so the engine does not drop when the cross member is removed.

3 Unbolt the cross member from the vehicle frame. The frame is directly below the oil pan. Four bolts secure the cross member to the frame. The cross member must be removed to gain clearance to remove the oil pan.

4 Pull the engine slightly upward with the engine hoist. You only need enough upward lift to slide the cross member off the engine frame. Lifting too much could cause damage to the motor mounts.

5 Drain the oil from the oil pan into a drain pan. Place the oil pan drain plug back into the pan once drained.

Remove the Transmission Side Mounts, Starter, Turbo Return Oil Plug , and Top Mounts for the rack and Pinnion

6 Remove the bolts that secure the oil pan to the bottom of the engine. There are 18 bolts holding the oil pan into place.

7 Wedge a flat scraper between the oil pan and the engine block to break the RTV gasket seal. Continue this until the oil pan is free from the engine block. Slide the oil pan backward to remove it from the vehicle. The pickup tube is located in the back of the pan. Be cautious not to damage the pickup tube as you remove the oil pan.

8 Scrape the old gasket off the oil pan with a flat scraper. Scrape the engine block to remove any gasket residue left behind by the oil pan. Both mating surfaces must be clean of old gasket and oil to ensure a proper seal.

9 Place a bead of RTV gasket sealer on the mating surface of the oil pan and allow it to skin for 15 minutes.

10 Place the oil pan gasket on top of the RTV gasket sealer. Ensure the bolt-holes in the gasket line up with the bolt holes in the oil pan. Place a bead of RTV gasket sealer on top of the gasket and allow it to skin for 15 minutes. Nissan recommends using the OEM Felpro gasket.

(( BE AWARE of where your dipstick is when you put the pan on. Many People, have installed the pan with the dipstick in and not realized it until the new oil pan was completely installed. This causes the end of the dipstick to get caught, and the dipstick won't pull out. The only way to fix this is to remove the pan and make sure the dipstick is removed when you install the oil pan.))

11 Place the oil pan against the engine block. Be cautious not to hit the gasket on the pickup tube or engine block while positioning it under the vehicle.

12 Bolt the oil pan into place using an alternating pattern from one side of the oil pan to the other. Thumb-tighten the bolts at first. Allow the RTV gasket sealer 15 minutes to adhere to the engine block and then tighten the bolts in alternating fashion with a wrench until fully tightened.

13 Place the cross member between the oil pan and the frame and secure it into place with the bolts.

14 Release the pressure on the engine hoist slowly. This drops the engine back onto the cross member.

15 Fill the engine with four quarts of 10W30 motor oil and remove the Nissan from the jack stands.

if you leave the a/c and pS lines on the car and drop the crossmember you'll still have to work around them, on your back with oil dripping down.

Engine removal:
remove hood
Disconnect battery
remove starter
remove fan shroud and belts
remove trans to engine bolts
unbolt engine mounts from crossmember
unbolt the PS pump from motor and swing it forward
unbolt a/c compressor and hang it forward
disconnect 2 radiator hoses
disconnect 2 heater hoses
disconnect 2 fuel lines
disconnect wire harness
set the engine on a tire, or a teardown table or bench or tailgate, roll it on it's side remove the pan, clean and prep surface and put it back.

Maybe I'm just old and lazy but i'd rather not crawl around on the floor, in between the legs of a cherry picker. To pull the motor you only need to access the mount and the 2 bottom trans bolts from the bottom, everything else you do from the top. It also gives you a chance to inspect and replace belts hoses other gaskets etc while you have it in front of you. It's only a couple of hours work either way but still "easier" to do it topside.

I put the drivetrain in a Z31 from the bottom once and it was a pita, probably a little quicker than coming in from the top but major PITA.
