I have a 1986 d21 with the z24 engine, the speedometer and the odometer have quit working. I have done some minor repair work on my own (mostly replacing parts) and thought I could fix this my self. I figure I should ask before I really mess something up. How would I go about fixing this? Or would it be better to take it to a shop and pay the labor?

speedo cables are pretty easy, pull the screws that hold on the plastic trim around the speedo, slip that out, then you should see 4 screws that hold in the speedo cluster, after you take them out the cluster will pull out enough to get your hands behind it to unplug it. Then there are 2 screws that hold the cable to the firewall, remove them. Unscrew it from the trans and the wire clip (that keeps it to the frame) and remove the cable assy! Then just re-route the new cable assy and put everything back together..On mine, I had to replace the speedo pinon gear too, it had a belly worn it and would'nt make contact with the drive gear, that was easy too
