Hello i have a 84 nissan rv with a blown head gasket. The engine serial is 296792 z24. I have read about the nightmare of the wedge and i tried to make one. Issue is it doesnt look like it would work! The motor might have been changed. I cant figure it out. The wedge would have to be less than 1 inch and i cant see any signs of the tensioner. It might be a different motor? . I cant seem to post a pic. The vin shows a vh45de motor according to the vin decoder.. Which is obviously impossible. I got the engine serial off the block. Any help would be great.

That's a Z24 engine. Notoriously a pain, but a good engine. It's the stock powerplant in most 720 trucks (which your RV was before it became an RV).

Thanks. I think ive figured out the secret to the 6.5 inch long, 1 inch stock, piece of soft wood which goes from1.75 inches down to 1.25 inches in width... You have got to bang it in there at an angle! Right? Because the gap is about 3/4 of an inch. I found ONE pic of a crookedly wedged piece of wood, which appears to contact the chain and also the front aluminum oart. Is this correct? I understand it cant move or im in big trouble. I was picturing the wedge fit down in there not all crooked and cockeyed... Am i on the correct track? This things a bit daunting and im a lil scared. Haha

I've just done a head-gasket replacement on my Nissan 720 truck and had to go through the whole tedious job of redoing the timing chain (it needed to be done anyways xD)
These pics may be useful to you: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... re=mh_lolz

As for the wedge - yes you do need to have a perfect, snug fit to stop the spring-loaded tensioner from popping out. In my case the custom-wedge made was not sufficient. This is probably what you're looking for: http://www.amazon.com/Alltrade-648831-N ... hain+wedge

Use caution... some wedges are actually for KA24 engines and are slightly shorter, they could have you end up redo your timing chain too. ;-)

Im trying to scrape up some money. This head gasket failure was unexpected. Ive read about using a garden hose to shove down there to "keep the tensioner from popping apart".

Has anyone tried using a piece of hose to hold the tensioner back? If the tensioner comes out a bit, without falling apart, will i not be able to get the sprocket on? Because ive got some hose... But barely any money right now.

Thanks again

You'll cost yourself more money than the part. I'll loan you mine if you promise to send it back. Don't stick a hose in there, it's destined to fail.

Thank you! I shaved down a piece and its looking just like the picture of the wedge above. Its very thin. I really appreciate the offer, as well as the warning for people with garden hoses! I fortunately am safe at the moment and should be able to procure a wedge of my own design or either of the offered models. It definately wedges hard. I think ill put a touch of oil on the pine, then wedge it. May the force be with us, right!? definately have to drill a hole for the rope to pull it out later. I feel like i want to go for it. Its quite a step of faith.
