Hi everyone I just recently bought a 1983 King Cab 720 4x4. I need to replace the passanger side tail light and this is where i need help. The only ones i can find on line all have a chrome trim. Do you all know of a website that would have the black trim ones for sale? And the odometer doesnt work, where do i begin to troubleshoot the problem? Also were can i download a maintance/service manual with wirring diagrams?

Ebay...

There's a supplier of taillights, (clear etc..) in Mexico, however the shipping usually costs as much as the part. Just be sure to get the correct body year. 1986.5 was when the 720 was redesigned and went to the more square looking D21.

For the odometer, check the transmission to make sure the cable is pushed in all the way. If it's ok there, check the back of the cluster to see if the cable is pushed in all the way. You basically squeeze the two ears of the plastic flange to remove it, and push it back on to attach it. There should be a "clicK' when it is connected. Check my instrument cluster thread for a little more information.

Buy a Haynes manual. Either at the parts store, or a used book store. I bought mine for $5.99 from a used book store.

Thanks a lot fo the reply I got the odometer to work. I only have one question all my guages read off, the fuel gauge marks to high and will mark wildly , the temp gauge marks wildly high to normal, the RPM gauge marks 0 at idel then up to 2.5k-3.5k when rev it. The spedo apears to work properly. Could it just be the cluster? And does the speed,RPM, and ODO come form the same cable?

Wild fuel gauge could be a bad sender unit in the tank. You'll need to check the voltage at the tank to determine if it is within specs..

Temp gauge could just be a loose connection at the temp. gauge unit. Check to see the connection is tight, and the wire itself is in good condition.

Tachometer is run by a resistor at the distributor. Don't know much about this as mine didn't come with one.

Only the speedometer is run by the speedo cable.

The gauge thing could be a ground problem, if they are all faulting the same.

Thanks for the suggestions I will take a look at the ground problem. I think that might be it because I began to notice at night the turnsigals are always slighly illuminated on the dash. And when i use them they both flash in the dash but not on the actual ouside marking lights. And for the tach and the fuel sending unit voltage I need to wait till I get my repair manual. Unless someone reading this knows the corect specs.

sort out the ground issue before messing with the sending units. its prolly just the ground the fuel gauge will fix if you find it.

I finally got around to taking apart the gauge cluster. It looks like somone was messing around with it before. The harness has conectors cut that are still live but just left to hang. The circuit path for the gauge cluster was covered with some sort of grease. Also the radio that had been installed before was wired really crappy. I cleaned up the cluster parts and removed the POS radio. It all works now! The RPM gauge was simply pushed lower than the zero mark. It was moving correctly but it was just offset low.
