I've been holding back on making a thread about my Celica here on Nico, but I figure we are all car people here, and can appreciate the classics.
I'm going to break it up, so it's not a huge wall of text in one post.

Not long after I got back from the US in May 2011, an opportunity presented itself.
My wife found a 1975 TA22 Toyota Celica convertible listed on gumtree (like craigslist, for Australia).
They were asking $4,000 or would consider a swap.
I didn't have any money, but I did have a Holden Rodeo ute which was using too much fuel for my liking.
(Not my actual ute, but looked the same as this)
Image

I wasn't sure that the owner would be interested, but we thought we should give it a shot.
One hour of driving and we arrived at the house where the car was.
Our hopes were lifted, as the business of Ruby's owner (A mobile safety screen door installer), was colour coded perfectly to the ute... This started looking like a trade was possible :woot:
As we headed to the back of the property and rounded the bend, she came into sight.
Sitting in the sunshine with the roof down..... I knew right then that I had to have her.
Image

Negotiations and discussions were short. Apparently, the car had been advertised for over a year, on and off, and no-one had even come to see the car! He test drove the ute, and I drove Ruby. We were both happy so the swap was done (or so I thought)
"You can't have the car if the roof doesn't go on" said Cath.
Fair call I guess. Only problem is that the roof hadn't been on the car for years, and so it had shrunk.
We spent 15 minutes pulling the roof, trying to stretch it out..... I WAS going to make this roof fit!
Obviously, we did get it on, otherwise this thread wouldn't exist.
As awesome as it was, it needed some work done.
The interior, although re-trimmed with fabric instead of vinyl, was outdated.

Brown and white interior :tisk:
Image

Original steering wheel, with a crack in the plastic at the top.
Image

Half repainted air cleaner covering the 2 barrel carb, which only had one functioning.... so it was quite gutless.
Image

Pea-shooter exhaust was falling off, which made it easier to convince the Mrs. that a new one was required sooner rather than later.

And so, that's the starting point of Ruby from when she joined the family.

I've always loved that bodystyle. There's a beat brown hardtop Celica from that era around here that's used to deliver pizza. The car deserves more.

LOVE it!

It's like I've been saying for years... classic Japanese cars have a ton of character.

LOTS of people own '69 Camaros. Boring. How many people own a clean droptop TA22 Celica?

I actually dig the striped fabric. It's period-correct. This looks like the kind of car President Reagan would have tooled around in at his ranch.

And you can say you have a Hemi engine.

Lose the two barrel and get some sidedrafts on the T.

Hang a disco ball from the rear view, seriously love it. I was always fond of that body style. I had a neighbor that gave his father a thousand dollars he had saved all summer to buy a car, he was going to the auction and I remember him telling his dad he didn't care what kind of car it was as long as it was a Celica. His father returned with a Valiant  :tisk: and $400.00, Tom sure was bummed and we ragged him a good bit. He sold the car to his brother and ended up with a Sunbird :frown: . I'm gonna have to show him this thread and remind him about that day in 1986. :chuckle: :dblthumb:

It was a tough choice on deciding what needed to be done first.
Interior? Exhaust? Carb?
I jumped in and tackled 3 jobs within a couple days of each other.

First up, was the radiator fan.
As it was bolted directly to a pulley and didn't have a clutch, it got noisy at mid to high revs.
Also not too sure about the design. Surely this would have created some power-sapping drag on the motor!
Image
I can assure you that all the fan blades are intact, and none have broken off.

Switched to a 16 inch thermo fan mounted to the front of the radiator. May have been overkill, but I would rather have too much cooling, than not enough. Anyone who lives in a hot climate will understand my reasoning here.
Image
(Unrelated side note; these shoes covered my feet while wandering all around Washington DC... very comfy)

Next, I installed a pair of 40mm Solex side draught carbs, from a 2TG engine.
New inlet manifold, converted from linkages to a cable, and used a carb syncroniser to tune her.

A couple of days later, the exhaust was completely replaced, using second hand headers (pacemaker), and a 2 1/4 inch mandrel bent system.

The rear muffler was tucked well up into the body, for a more inconspicuous look.

Much better.

After all this was done, it was on to the cosmetics....

I really liked that era Celica, they were such cool little cars. I remember in that era, Toyota offered two US trim levels: the GT (which had all the sporty touches) and the base model ST (the local joke was ST stood for "secretarial transport"). I'd love to own a GT now.

nice ride.

My cousin sold off his really nice S13 for one of those older Celicas. His is a green hard top. Very nice piece of equipment. I just had my a** handed to me by one in GT4 last night. I was driving a Bluebird 1.8L SSS.

I needs me a Liftback GT.

I found one that sadly got smashed to hell in the local pull a part. Found that I can comfortable get in and drive one though! Then I saw the big shed from a timber rattlesnake between my legs just under the seat...

The timing is ok. It was started with the choke on full (remember when cars had those????) hence why the idle was lumpy to start with.

Great car! I personally prefer the fastbacks :)

I've had a '78 coupe, 79 coupe, and a '81 liftback. I still look at ebay from time to time for a Sunchaser.

haha :P

I replaced a carb in a slant-6 Plymouth when I was either 7 or 8. It's ok.

I still like the way it sounds, but it makes my truck sound like a pus*y tho... :(
