No such thing as free. It might not seem like it, but everything imparts cost if not money on the front end, time, which could equate to money and/or peace of mind on the back end. You could wind up sinking $1500 into that "cheap" car trying to get it done then how much of a bargain did you get?
If it runs now, do a compression check, look for and correct fluid leaks, suspect hoses, belts, tires and brakes, change the oil and filter, flush the cooling system, give it a basic tuneup and drive the lil fella.
