Hi all:

I own a 1972 Datsun 240Z, great car but she wont stay running unless I key the key on the start position. The minute I set it to the "ON"
position it turns off. I replaced the ignition switch but the problem wont go away. Has anyone had the same problem?

Sounds like off to ebay for an ignition switch.

That's exactly what I did but the problem continued. In fact, I replaced two switches just in case one was defective.

Double checked the wiring diagram and here is something to check:

Background: Back in the days cars had 6 volts batteries and ignition coils were designed to produce spark on this voltage. When electrical systems were upgraded to 12 volts, the extra voltage could overstress the ignition coils causing failures. To prevent this, a resistor was added to limit the current through the coil. This gave engineers the ability to give some extra oomph to the spark by bypassing this resistor when starting.

A failed resistor or its associated wiring would cause exactly your symptoms. If you have an ohm meter measure the resistor mounted next to the coil. If it reads very high resistance, replace it. If it reads very low resistance (a few ohms), you have a wiring problem.

DJ' is correct, there are 2 power leads near the coil, one is cranking power one is constant power. Have you fiddled with the wiring near the coil recently? Also how's your tach? Oddly the ignition circuit on 240's grounds through the tach, a bad tach can cause ignition problems, as stupid as that sounds.Could also be an issue in the chassis wiring or the fuse box.
