Hi I recently acquired a 1970 Datsun 240z I have no idea the literage of the engine. It has the 4 speed manual transmission. Can someone please help me and tell me 2 things (stock specs for the dual carbs AKA turns to seat for air/fuel mixture) also what is the timing supposed to be set to?. and the second being a little bit of troubleshooting help. Why is the spark plug closest to the radiator fowling out every 45 mins of running?! Is this the dreaded warped head I've been hearing about or is it possible that its something else? Anyone who can help me I am eternally greatful!

Welcome to Nico and congrats on the Z!

the engine is an L24 of the L6 family of engines, at least it is if it's stock, also the early cars had the most slopy shifter ever put in a car, rowing gears feels more like rowing a boat, the SU carbs have a great fanbase, I personally swapped to turbo with fuel injection, when tunign the carbs, I believe it's suggested to start at about 1.5 turns out and tweak form there, also be sure to check the carb oil and that the carb pistons move freely and that the fuel line coming from the fuel bowl flows freely, these can clog and cause a lot of drama, as for #1 fowling out, could be a carb issue, is it fuel fowling or is it coolant, the head warping isn't very common on the L6's but it can happen, but if you got it you'd be buring coolant, could also be a bad valve stem seal and or a dropped valve guide, oh and I assume you have good dist cap, plugs and wires so a weak spark isn't contributing to a fuel fowl
