19 inch tires on 2012 EX - deserve the bad reviews?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Greetings all,

I have a 2008 EX that I’ll be trading in for a 2012 EX. I’ll be getting the deluxe touring package with the 19 inch wheels.

The OE tire is the Bridgestone Turanza EL42 which gets some really horrible reviews on tire rack.

Does anyone have any first-hand feedback on these tires? Appreciate any feedback.
Thanks.

Hi jaeger33,

I was wondering the reason to upgrade to the 2012? Is the 2012 any different then 2008 (Which is what I have now).
I'm also considering the same but not too sure if it's worth up paying at least $10k+ to go to 2012 model. If it's same spec as my 2008 which is fully loaded with everything, the cost might be close to $20k. Have you gotten your 2008 appraised? I'll be happy if I can get at least $25k for it but probably not that high for trade in. KBB private sale for my car is around $27k.

Sirnice,

There’s a few differences between the 08 and the 12, mostly in the tech package (such as the blind spot warning and the full speed range cruse control) but you’re right – it’s mainly unchanged since 2008. The main reason is that my sister needs a car, and I’m going to give her my 08 and get a 12 for myself.

The dealer offered me $24k as a trade-in (2008, Platinum exterior, stone interior, fully-loaded, 21,000 miles).

I believe my '08 altima coupe came with Turanza EL42's. The tires were unimpressive, and had to be replaced at around 30k. I now have turanza sereneties, which have a 50k mile warranty and seem to have better traction.

I've got 19s but my perceptions and impressions wont count since my tires are aftermarket.

At some point the tires will be changed or u can take them off brand new and sell on eBay to partially offset the cost of new tires?

Is it possible for u to test drive an EX with 19s and get your own 1st hand impressions? Those are the ones that really count. I take reviews and opinions with a grain of salt as most folks on here know already. Facts and logic are usually indisputable though.

Some people have over-inflated tires and then complain that they ride rough or ride on various road surfaces that are paved with traction materials.
Driving styles differ as well.
Weight, suspension tuning and tire size also come into play.

Report back with your perceptions... I think u'll feel the road a bit more with the 19s but u will be more than satisfied unless u prefer a softer ride...

Jmann – thanks for the info. Helpful to know.

EX-Kat-35 – Good point, and I agree that first-hand impressions are the only ones that really count. For example, I have the Dunlops on my 08, and while there are poor reviews for them as well, I find them to be decent performers. They are getting a bit loud as they wear, but they have been more than fine in all weather conditions.

I have driven the ‘12 with 19 inch wheels and I’m pleased with them on dry pavement. What got me thinking about a swap were the consistent comments on tire rack (from Infiniti G drivers) about how lousy they are in wet conditions. Far more so than the number of complaints about the Dunlops. Thus, I was wondering if there were any EX owners with the Turanza Els who could comment on their experiences with the tire, especially in wet conditions.

Have not been able to test drive them yet in the rain -- having a stretch of good weather. Never rains when you want it to...

I have the Turanza 19s, AWD; have driven substantial distances well into triple digit speeds, no complaints or concerns. Rain handling perfectly adequate, no hydroplaning problems (although the tyres only have about 9K miles on them to date). Needless to say, the AWD does impact wet-weather handling substantially, but nonetheless I have no criticisms of these OE tyres, to date.

I have only had my 2011 left over Journey AWD for about 6 weeks, but previously had a G 37 sedan with sport package. I find the Turanza's are much quieter and seem to ride a bit less harshly than the SportMaxx Dunlop 18s on the G did. Still, they are different vehicles so a direct comparison is hard. No difficulties on curves beyond body lean due to the stiffer suspension and additonal height and weight over the G. The tires seem to stick well. I have been out in the rain and have not noticed anything unusual about the handling. We have had an incredibly mild winter here in the northeast, but I did take it out in the snow last week. The car seemed confident and I had no problems with turning or stopping. It also seem much better than the G did on the one occasion it was in snow. So, just brief experience so far with less than 3k on the car and tires, I like em so far. I also really like the wheels and the looks of the 19s on the vehicle. ;)

I have a 2011 with the 19" tire package and have been very impressed with the stock Bridgestones. They are a bit louder than my Maxima with Michelin's but good wet traction, good dry traction and handling.
