Hey, I have a 1994 j30t. I am now thinking of upgrading my wheels.I was interested in getting a staggered configuration.

18x8 with (245,35,18) in the front18x9 with (265,35,18) in the rear

I tried a couple of online wheel and tire packages but they just dont wana sell me the wheels saying I MUST go with 18x8's all around but I really wana get the staggered package. Its just $100 more. The reps tell me the tires will RUB!

I dont get how 18x9's wont fit the car as I see people on CAR domain having 20's and 22's???

Can anybody please help me with this so I can make a decission?

Here are the wheels I liked.

I really appreciate your help. I just need someone to tell me if the staggered sizes will fit 100% and then I can order. Also if they fit, would any mods be necessary or they'd just go on directly?

THanks

18x8 35 will fit great on the front

18x9 35 wont fit real good on the rear, youll want more like 40-45, with 265s and a good fender roll you might be able to do it.

Im running 18x9s on the back of my Q and the rear suspension is basiclaly the same as the J...

with the right offset you could run 18x9.5 or 18x10 no problem.

Hey thanks for the suggestions. I am getting very confused with the whole offset business. I even tried the offset calculator posted on other threads but its confusing me even more.

How does a Fender Roll work by the way?

I need some suggestions on appropriate tire sizes.

The rims descriptions is as follows:17x8, so you can fit up to a 245 tire on them. +42mm offset, generally you can fit this on a car of up to +48mm offset or as low as +35mm. They are 5 bolt 114.3

Now I would like to go with a 245,40,17 on the REAR and 225,40,17 on the FRONT. Do you think this would work?

ok here is how offset works...

The offset is the distance from the center of the wheel the hub (mounting point) of the wheel is. So a wheel with width 8in and offset 0 would have the hub 4in from the front of the wheel and 4in from the back. Likewise, a wheel with width 10 and offset 0 would have the hub 5in from the front and 5in from the back... Likewise, an 8in wide wheel with offset 35 will have 10mm LESS clearance from the fender than a wheel with offset 45... Effectively, the wheel is moved 10mm inward, giving you 10mm less on the suspension side but 10mm more on the fender side....

As you can see, offset is based on width. So, an 18x8 ET35 will NOT fit the same as an 18x9 ET35...

When comparing wheels of the same width, this is what you need to know... A higher offset number will move the wheel closer to the inside of the car (and thus give you more clearance on the fender side). Likewise, less offset will give you less clearance on the fender side...

The reason you use the offset calculators is so you can easily compare wheels of different widths/offsets..

Unfortunately I do not personally know how things fit on J30s thus I cannot give you a really good fit.

All a fender roller does is bend the inner lip of the fender upward so that the tire has more clearance.

18x8 +42 would probably work but its gonna be a pretty crappy fit. Theyll sit way in, probably look OEM-ish if thats what your after...

One thing you need to consider is tire overall diameter and weight capacity. On a car like the J thats pretty heavy (compared to most "tuner cars")..

OH man, I think you've got me started on another one of my "wheel and tire 101" lectures. Its a lot more complicated than you think, but once you understand whats going on, its not that simple. You just have to be VERY particular about tire sizes, wheel width and offset. Then you start thinking about WHEEL load capacity and then WEIGHT....

Probably more info than you wanted, but it didnt cost you anything.

Hey Man,

The lecture was awesome. I understand alot more of it than before.. I had a completely different idea of what OFFSETS were before.. I thought it was the diamater offeset that the tire adds to the rim HAHA thats so wrong from the real things.. ****

Anyways I really do appreciate your help. I guess when I go to the tire people I'll ask them to explain it a bit more with visual instructions.. Thanks for putting in the time boss!

So as far as the 17X8 rims go.. you think they'll be ok on a J? I'll figure out a tire size later.. but just need some assurance on the rims as I have made a deal with a person for coming Saturday and need to make sure they'll fit before I buy em..

This forum is the best thing I've found in so long..

worst case scenario with aformentioned wheels is they stick in too much and you use a small spacer to get the desired fit.... Other than that they should be fine.

hope this helps
