:ylsuper How much does the 89-94 240SX weigh? With an S14 SR20DET Black Top Motor swaped? How quick should it be? 1/4 mile? 0-60? What makes it not smog legal? Is this engine reliable? Please go into detail. My 300ZX Threw a rod on 2 differnt motors. It wasn't exactlly reliable. Thanx, :ylsuper

Do realize that the S14 blacktop is not a 180SX engine first of all, the later 180SX's came with S13 Blacktop engines.

The coupe should be roughly 2600lbs, full tank, no driver. The Fast Back should be roughly 2700lbs, full tank, no driver.

Look for the stock engine (not that its ever stock for more than 5 sec) to run high 14's, who really cares about 0-60, i dont.

This engine isnt smog legal but it can be emissions legal, it really depends on the states laws. Smog has a couple factors with CO and CO2 which cause it to sometimes not pass smog tests, but if you got a fully working, good condition engine you shouldnt have problems with the general emissions test. If it fails it will most likely be at idle(probably running rich due to the turbo).

The engine is reliable if you drive like you would any other car and not thrash the hell out of it. Though this can also depend on what condition the engine was in when you recieved it.

You say that the 180sx came with the S13? Will the S14 fit with no problems? or should I get the S13. It has less HP, which is one reason I liked the S14. I also heard that the S13 was a weaker engine, than the S14 and 15. Speculate??

You really havent been around long, anyways i'll just copy what I said a couple days ago about this issue:

Just because the S14 has 20 more hp doesnt make it a better platform to start from, nearly all the power made in the new SR20DET's was derived from the larger turbos added. If you ever planned on modding an SR then you would probably want an S13 red or black top as they have a few slight advantages over the S14 and S15's. So in short, yes it is very easy for the S13 SR to match the S14 and S15 SR's power.

The S14 comes with vvt which does little to nothing special (from what we hear).

You can cross chassis codes and put any SR (13-15) into any chassis (13-15). Putting an S15 into any other 240SX is difficult.

Added: The S13 uses a high port intake design vs the S14's low port design, this makes the S13 a better platform for overall power for reasons I do not know (im no physicist/engineer). But the S13 is by no means weaker, i think you got your info crossed somewhere along the way.

I love how perplexed the newbies get when you tell them to go with an S13 motor over the S14, "but it has less horsepower?!?!?"

not necessarily...they all have the "same" block, head materials, etc....

the S13 head is high port design, vs the S14,15 low port heads, which some prefer for high hp applications.

the s14 , 15 have a "better" stock turbo, and the s15 has larger fuel injectors than the others...

i wouldnt say any are better...just newer, and slightly different,

ie. the S14', and 15 have the VTC(variable timing )

import concept: did you just not look at anything else before you posted this thread?? There are tons of threads that answer every single question you have asked... If you buy an s14 sr engine, your just going to be paying more money to get to whatever hp goals you have. If you mod the engine after you get it (most will) It doesn't really matter what you start with. If you just want an engine and wont touch it after, get a later model Sr. If you plan on modding go with s13 sr. Now be a good little scc reader and LOOK IT UP..........
