Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I just bought a 90 240sx. Its black, hatchback, sunroof, 5spd. It runs and I picked it up for $800.00. My plan is to swap in a sr20det.

I have done a lot of research on everything I want to do, and I hope that I will be able to use this forum for answers.

One question I have tried to look for and I have not found it. I read some articles on Sil80s. So my question is was the 180sx in Japan the hatchback and the Silvia was the coupe? Where the 240sx had both in US. So if you have a 240sx hatch back in US and put a Silvia front end it would be a Sil80 and if you had a 240sx coupe and put a Silvia front end it would be a Silvia.

ThanksTony

just a warning but u might get flamed for askin this, ive seen a few posts like this, from what ur sayin ur rite, but then u might get told how its not a sil80 unless its an acutal sil80 same with the silvia. i think ur rite but u might get a whoooole lotta talk about how its only a 180 if its actually outta japan and its only a silvia if its outta japan. just a warning, i agree wit u but authenticity is a big thing here

No, eitherway, it's still a 240SX.

But in practicallity, you are correct. It will *look* like those cars.

eehh... everyone who is anal on the authenticity thing needs to relax. Its the same damn car. Especially if you swap in an SR20DET. All that leaves you with is the L/H vs R/H drive thing. Which is only that way because of the country you are in. I kind of agree with the whole Sil80 thing since those were a limited production vehicle from the company but as for the Silvia thing yea it's the same damn car. Props to you for wanting your car to look more like it was supposed to be but never was!! Just because they call the car by a different name doesn't mean it's a different car. Kind of like the Z32 300ZX, it was the Fairlady over there and the 300Z over here, different cars.... I think not.

they'll look similar, and even with the SR swap it'll be closer to the real deal.

the thing is with the real deal is there's many minor differences. like the factory LSD and thicker J30 axles. clutch pedal travel is shorter on jdm S13s. 180sx brakes are the same diameter as 300zx brakes, but use different calipers. pre-91 S13s have some funky brake and caliper combo not offered here. when i have to look for new pads, i'm going have to buy 90 maxima calipers and pads and 95 altima rotors.

i'm not upset about people converting their S13s to Silvias/180s/sil80s though. Imitation is the best form of flattery.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I am not trying to get authentic. I just had a question I couldn't find the answer to.

I used to be into american muscle. My first car in 1983 was a cherry '67 Camaro with 400hp. I have living, breathing American muscle all my life. 4 Camaros and 69 Suburban later, I am getting into the tuner scene. I was going to get 90's eclipse, but changed to a 240sx. So I am still a "noob".

Thanks againTony

if you are into american muscle, wait for hinsonsupercars.com to release the s13-ls1 kit. ETA in a few months. S14 is almost finished.

ok, compared to the american counterpart:

silvia = 240sx coupe with silvia front180sx = 240sx hatchback, 89-90 had ca18, 91-98 had the sr20sil80 = technically they dont exist since i believe it was a dealer package, but they are silvias with added options

but if you do an engine swap, front end conversion, and switch sides the wheel is on its still a 240sx. it will be close, but you still cant run around calling it a 180sx or silvia because its not. i dont know about other people, but sometimes when i see "180sx" or "sileighty" on forums i actually click on it thinking the person might actually have said car. it gets annoying.

nope...every car with the 240sx coupe rear had the silvia front in japan and were sold as silvias. only the 180sx had the USDM front end, with the hatchback rear.

the sileighty was a licensed custom job made and sold by the japanese dealer kids heart. they say about 500-800 of the official cars were ever built. the official cars used the dual halogen lights and had "sileighty" on the quarter window glass. silvia front + 180 rear.

sileighties existed. and it wasn't a silvia with options. it's a 180sx but that doesn't mean much to me. they're worth a ton right now. they have sileighty rear quarter glasses different cams blah blah and some specific stuff.

it's sort of like the nismo 270r

basically you can call the car whatever you want. 180sx and 240sx didn't have as big differences as like many honda cars vs the japanese.
