Anyway, did you guys see the 180sx for sale on ebay? I bid on the thing for three grand and was out bid at the last second, I was at school when it ended, the final bit was 3,450, it was the guys sisters, get this, 1994 180sx, all options, 7,000 miles, black top sr20det ,auto went for 3,450!! I am still pissed about it.

So now I got in touch with the guy, hes gona help me out and get me a killer 180 like the one on ebay. Now, what do you guys know about importing a car to the us, I know the taxes, im not worried about the price, it will come to about 7 grand all said and done for that car that was on ebay.

I just need lagistics, and what is expected at customs. Any legal information would be a great help, any thing at this point,

Thanks alot guys, it good to be back on the boards,

You could always seperate the engine and chassis in Japan and then you wouldnt have to worry as much about customs, then put the pieces back together over here or better yet tune the engine before you put it back in.What would happen if you imported it to mexico and tryed to cross the border with it? Do they check out peoples cars (License, Registration)?

You couldn't import it into Mexico, I'm not even going to go THRU all of that. : )

As far as importing the car here, it will cost you a lot more than 7,000 dollars. Shipping from Japan for 1 car to a dock in Cali is going to be like 4,000 easy for a single non-business shipment. Then, at customs you have to have a good reason for the whole car being there, otherwise they won't let you leave with it because it obviously wouldn't be salvage, they won't let you drive it away, you'll have to ship it assuming you can get it out of customs. If you say its for race purposes, they won't let it go unless its already certified race legal, which means stripping the entire interior, putting in a roll cage and fire extinguisher, blah, blah blah blah blah. Lots of work and lots of money, then, if you get it marked as race legal you can get it thru customs, not easy. you have to pay taxes on it and it will never be street legal.

There are a few ways to get around the legality bit, but nothing I can talk about on here, and it will cost you a few thousand more dollars anyways. So when its all said and done, you'll have a 180SX that will have to have been changed so much its not a 180SX anymore for about 10,000 dollars easy. It would be significantly easier to do a RHD conversion and engine swap to a US spec car, it would also be "more legal" but still not legal. : )
