well this is a 2 part question, one if u replace the speedometer mechanism, not the whole gauge face and everything just the part that makes the needle move, and put the MPH face on will it be the right speed? and 2nd part has anyone done this http://www.zeroyon.com/pics/in....html ? if so is it hard?

sounds diffucult, but it would be awesome to have a 180sx speedo that read 180mph to.

Its pretty easy took me a while to get my friend to snag a 12K ohm resistor from his electronics class. I was to lazy to go down the street to radioshack. I would say the hardest part is soldering the resistor in the correct place. I also can't solder for ****.

I did it a few months ago during I havn't drove my car since last fall. I couldn't tell you how it works for a few more weeks.

The link posted didn't have the pics there. I found this one instead.http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/20/47/

I also know how to make my own square wave function generator for this project. If anyone is interested in the design please PM me.

LS Auto sells 180MPH speedos for pretty cheap. They're guarenteed to be accurate.

But what is the fun in that? Besides, http://www.lsauto.com/products.asp. $115 is not what I would call cheap. A new resistor and potentiometer would cost less than $5, if that.

I am still working on a Wien-Bridge based design.

This is a classic chip that could provide an oscillating signal to mimic the VSS, as describe on the Zeryon website. Really, if you are able to retune your speedometer then you don't even need a JDM unit. You could change your USDM one and just find a new face for it.

The first link is the same as the one I posted on the Zeroyon site. In fact the Zeroyon site even gave freshalloy credit. It's always good to have mirrored sources.

The stuff at the very bottom about the function generator, you can build one for yourself with an NE555 chip. Another method would be to design a crystal oscillator for 429Hz (100Mph) and then convert it to a square wave with a schmidt trigger. Either way a simulated 100mph signal could be had for fairly cheap. Depending on wether or not you already have some basic electronics tools.

I dont understand? I dont think an s13 could ever go 180 with out some serious areo work...plus when even going like 120 what does the number matter at that point? faster/slower....all you need to know speedo's are so you can accuratly limit your speed imo

Because when you are at this point it's a pain to use an equation to figure out how fast you are actually going when you could just simply read your speedo.Yes I know my dash is dusty...

For me it's just because I am a fresh electrical engineering graduate and I am fascinated in both figuring out how to do this, how to do it both cheap and effective, and understanding how it works.

And my dash looks like that. Little OT Side note, I just might be moving to Florida soon, Florida240SX. Miami area it looks like.
