I have spent some time searching through the threads and f.a.q's and didn't find a direct answer, so please don't bite my head off if this was already posted. I need new tires a have (2) 225/45r17 and (2) 255/40r17. Will they fit on 17x7 rims? Now the key word is FREE. I didn't pay for them so I hope they fit. This isn't a "best wet/dry/drag/autox" question. Just trying to take advantage of some free tires. Thanks for the help.

Depending on the tire, the 225/45-17 may fit (that's pushing it). The 255/40-17 is a no-go. There is no way for those to work on a 7". They are simply too wide to even seal properly on the bead area of the rim.

A 7 in wide rim is equal to 177.8 mm.

225mm - 177.8mm = 47.2mm

47.2mm * (1 cm/10mm) * (1 in./2.54cm)= 1.86in. (approx.). Divide by 2 and that is roughly how much the tire will stick out on each side of the rim. With a 225 section width it will bulge out Approx. .93 in. (15/16 in.)

With a 255 section width approx. 1.5 in. will bulge out.

Sorry to get all technical, but hopefully it help you visualize it.

I run 225/50/16 on 6.5 width and car rides fine. 225 on a 7 width should do even better.

On my last post instead of saying section width, I meant tread width. I was just informed that section width is measured from side wall to side wall and is not the same as tread width. Sorry for any misleading info.
