I just picked up a set of 2001 17" touring wheels off Ebay and thought I'd gotten a good deal-until they showed up. The finish on two is in bad shape and I need to fix them. I'm discussing options to rectify right now but the guy sounds a little bit defensive and unhealpful so I may be stuck with them.

That being said, how can I refinish these wheels? These are the ones with the slightly shiny finish (which I really don't like), can I have them media balsted and then spray them with clear coat? What will remove the finish? sanding? Stripping?

Anybody got experience with this?

Andy, I remember a couple good threads on wheel refinishing and/or painting but this is the only one I could find. There's a more detailed one somewhere, I know.

Several years back I spent two whole days refinishing 4 piepans. A box of steelwool, two pounds of sweat, and a can of clear coat enamal. One year later and the clear coat was pealing. I did something wrong.

It was a big pita. I now have two sets of anniversary 17" wheels. One was refinshed from the after market wheel guy in Chicago. They still look ok after two years.

Thanks for the responses!

I asked hoping for one answer and got another answer that I like just as much-PAINT THEM!

It never would have occured to me to paint them but I've been looking for a reason to experiment with a hyper-silver color on wheels and these will be it.

Also, got some resolution on the ebay deal in the form of a 33% refund. So I either got a set of 4 touring wheels for $215, two of which suck, or two good wheels for $215 with two trash wheels thrown in for additional shipping charges.

Andy,

There's a company on ebay which refinishes wheels. If they have your wheel in stock they just mail you a set, and you use their shipping boxes to resend them your old set. I don't know their name or how good the work is however.

Good luck with the paint.
